So before I go shower and start working for the day, I thought I'd post the recent thoughts that are floating about the most coherently in here.
I'm doing commissions! Not just volunteer stuff either. I put up a simple advertisement on Craigslist a few days back, and while I didn't get a lot of responses (it wasn't an exciting ad) I did get a few, at least one of which is going somewhere. Woo! I've been getting more agressive in looking for work, this kind in particular. It feels more meaningful to me than most of the other jobs I could get at this point in time. (Not that I've been able to get those jobs, but whatever.)
This is exciting to me. If these first few go well, then I plan to run another advertisment in a week or two -- a much more exciting one. Something along the lines of 'Unique Christmas Gifts' or something. Not only is this a good way for me to bring in money, but it's a good way for me to build my portfolio professionally. Hurrah!
The next piece of brainfood on tap is something my Dad was kind of pushing yesterday. He asked me if I had been applying for summer jobs yet, and I thought he was being a little crazy, but eventually he said something to the effect of 'If you want to work in the Gaming industry, you've got to get your foot in the door and go where the jobs are, even if that means taking a summer intern job in Vancouver.'
It blew my mind briefly at first. I was thinking about staying in Toronto, though not seriously, but then it occurs to me that he has a good point. Most of the jobs I want exist in either Vancouver or Montreal, but the idea of just cutting loose and moving to Vancouver for a few months to really try and break in to the industry... well, it appeals, to say the least. I've never been out to that part of the country and I've always wanted to see it. It's sort of random, but I'm definately going to look in to it. I havn't done terribly much adventurous stuff, and just maybe I'd like to start...
The last bit is something a little bold that I hadn't thought about seriously before. I've got an idea for a photo installation that I think would be pretty spectacular, and could exist as part of a series. However, due to the nature of it, and possibly needing HUNDREDS of photos, maybe upwards of THOUSANDS, it would be extremely costly to do. And then even more, it's a lot of work, and it would be something that having an SLR would make all the difference in quality. So I'm doing some inquires later today -- in first year, one of my Profs, Don, mentioned that there are a lot of art grants given at the school that go unclaimed, and he suggested that if we had some sort of idea that we wanted to do, we should apply for a grant and spend the money on nice tools for ourselves to produce the art with.
Now, I don't know anything about the grants, but if they'd give me some $1500 to do an installation or an installation series? I could get a better camera and actually do all the work without costing myself a cent, but I don't know what the restrictions are on this stuff. If they want it in a certain time frame, and then want it on display somewhere, that's beautiful. But I can't imagine how else it'd work... So I'm going to email Tanya, the studio head, and see what I can learn about these things.
This is might be a slow year for me, but there's no reason why I can take advantage of the time! Muahaha. :D
I'm feeling good. Unstoppable, and a force to be reckoned with. And I like it. ;)
