So, friendslist, I have an old Gateway that originally ran WinME, poor thing. Although the hardware is fine, the OS finally died a horrible death a few months ago. I happened to run across my WinXP disk and decided to wipe and install--which worked fine until it came to registering. Apparently I've already registered the maximum number of times. We'll leave aside my opinions on Microsoft's incredible greed and get straight to my question: has anyone tried calling the number they provide and asking for another (free) install? Or, alternatively, does anyone have experience with how much it would cost to get another registration code?
This computer is for Will to do school work (including some internet-based math work that's required) and play games on, so I really need it to run Windows. However, if it's going to cost something close to the price of a low-end new computer to get this program that I already bought installed, I'm going with the new one that will last longer.
