Hard to believe that he's five already. When we were creating the nursery we chose colours and furniture we could live with for five years because by then it would probably need redecorating and with MFI furniture we'd probably be replacing that too. And here we are, with a happy yellow bedroom with blue carpet, and sturdy MFI furniture that will last a good five years more.
YoungBloke woke a little before 7, as usual, and came into our bed until the clock said 7. Then we all came downstairs and he marvelled at the size of the three presents before him. He was delighted to become the proud owner of the Playmobil volcano with spinosaurs, jeep with velociraptor, and stegosaurus nest.
His party was at 2pm at the local softplay centre, Jitterbugs. Six of his old friends from nursery were able to come, as well as 15 of his new school friends, and they all played nicely together (well, you know - in the same vicinity). YB was absolutely delighted to see his old friends. I was able to catch up with the nursery parents, and met some of the school parents too. OldBloke's cake was admired. After party tea there was pass the parcel (which YB won, which I wasn't expecting, to be honest), then disco with bubble machine, then party bags and home. I have to say a big thank you to OB for all his organisation - I hate organising parties because I didn't have any as a child, and regardless of whether people have RSVPed yes, I don't think anyone will come. I didn't have to worry about any of it this year.
At home, YB opened an impressive amount of presents, many of which he was absolutely delighted with. The spy watch and monocular were a particular hit, especially when I showed him that he could point the red light at the floor and tease Smogg into chasing it.
After YB went to bed we opened a bottle of cava, and toasted YB, for reaching the ripe old age of five, and Pete, who died far too young at 40.
I had two slices of birthday cake after dinner. I know OB had loads of trouble, and the round cakes bombed badly. But the final product was lovely. Well done, honey.
oldbloke,
birthday,
