white cups and napkins
sehun/hyeri, 2,685w, pg-13.
the two stared at each other for a while, staring in silence.
a/n: oh man, this was supposed to be a short drabble. that surely didn't work out well.
a/n: here's a gifset to go along with this.

she was always there. the same girl, every single time. but of course he always visited the place on the same day, same time, every tuesdayand friday.

he had always wanted to attempt at speaking to her, but he was always a bit too shy and afraid. sehun never spoke up and the only thing he has ever heard from her was the price of his coffee ( which she doesn't even say anymore because it's the same every single time ).

the girl was filled with surprises as he realized one day when he discovered the nicely written message on his white cup. 'have a nice day!'. a simple message that any employee could have written, but it made his day.

that was tuesday and when friday came, sehun couldn't help but check his cup again. and there it was. 'why don't you try something a little different?'

maybe he was acting up, but he's been waiting for an opportunity to talk to her for forever, and he couldn't let this opportunity pass. he approached the girl at the counter, picking up a napkin. 'i'm a little scared of change'.

he could swear he saw a faint smile on her face.

it was excruciating to wait from friday to the next tuesday. it was a total of three whole days without seeing the girl.

when he walked to retrieve his coffee, he was met with the girl staring straight into his eyes with a wide smile on her face. there was a black pen in her hand as she handed him his drink.

not wanting to squeal in joy right in front of her, he smiled back as smoothly as possible before taking his usual seat near the glass windows. he quickly checked the message. 'what's your name?'

that's when he realized that he didn't know the other girl's name either. a slight frown formed on his face before he walked up to the counter.

instead of reaching for his own pen, he took her marker before writing out his message on another piece of napkin. 'sehun. oh sehun. and what's your name?'

jongin came over on thursday, walking in with a puzzled look on his face.

"since when did you collect coffee cups?" he picked one up, his eyes widening when he saw the writing. before he could read anything, sehun had taken the cup from him, hitting the other on the head with it.

"none of your business, you twat. come on let's go study because i know you need it."

he simply ignored jongin's mocking voice, repeating what sehun just said along with his quiet murmer of 'you act like soojung'.

the next day, jongin insisted on coming along (bringing soojung along with him because the two were inseperable).

like always, the girl already had his drink ready before taking the orders of the other two. as he was about to walk away, he could feel a tug on his sleeve. he turned around in surprise.

the girl gave him the same bright smile before pointing to her name tag. he leaned closer to read it. "hyeri."

a bright smile formed on the girl's face as she gave him a thumbs up. it was cute, and he couldn't help it when a similar smile came upon his own face.

soojung didn't fail to notice.

"so when did you guys first meet?"

the question definitely caught him off guard. the three of them were at the cafe again, and sehun was kind of staring at hyeri (more like obviously staring).

he let off a scoff as he started to shake his head and stutter. "wh-what do you mean? psh. hyeri? oh, i don't know, i, uh--"

that's when soojung burst out into laughter which echoed throughout the whole cafe mainly because it was empty today. sehun leaned over to cover soojung's mouth because he could sense all the workers staring. "goodness, jongin, what do you see in her--"

jongin kicked his leg harder than he ever had which left sehun in a whimpering mess. soojung, from the corner of her eye, caught hyeri watching with a worried expression. she waved her hand, motioning the said girl over.

although a little shocked, the girl scurried over. "anything i can assist with?" she was speaking to soojung, but her eyes were focused on sehun.

"yeah, do you guys have a first aid kit here? i think sehun might have gotten a cut."

"what? i don't have a--"

another kick was delivered, this time by soojung. she mouthed for him to 'shut the fuck up and thank her later'. and as if nothing happened, she smiled towards the waitress.

awfully confused, hyeri still went to get a first aid kit, trying to remember where it was.

"what was that soojung? i'm not hurt anywhere-- holy fuck!"

the said girl had stabbed him on his arm with her pencil, leaving a small but bleeding hole in his arm.

a sinister laugh was heard from soojung as she watched sehun wincing in pain. "you'll thank me later, trust me."

as if on cue, hyeri returned, her eyes widening when she saw the bleeding area, kneeling down beside him as she proceeded to clean up his wounds.

soojung and jongin couldn't stop snickering as they saw sehun's face flushing red. he couldn't even watch her cleaning up his wound and simply looked out the window before scowling at jongin whose laughter was growing louder and louder.

feeling bad for her friend, soojung clamped a hand over jongin's mouth, giving him a smack on the back of his head with her other hand.

there was a reason sehun liked soojung more than jongin.

the next time around, sehun decided to come alone because soojung and jongin were annoying, and they couldn't stop flirting with each other. it was cute, he guessed. he's still waiting for the day jongin will get the guts to ask her out. ("i could say the same about you, you little shit--")

hyeri greeted him with a smile along with his coffee. the message today was about his annoying friends. 'your friends were cute'. he couldn't help but scrunch up his nose because he was expecting something more.

instead of heading over to his seat right away, he immediately grabbed a napkin, scribbing down with a trembling hand the following:

'are you free saturday at 6?'

upon reading the memo, hyeri raised her brow before cracking a smile on her face. she took back his cup, scribbling an excited 'yes♥' on it.

the two stared at each other for a while, staring in silence.

this was gonna be the first time they actually speak to each other. they've rarely shared actual words which was a little ridiculous because the two could speak perfectly fine, but they chose to scribble notes instead.

sehun was actually dressed up.

( "who in the world is this girl to you that you're actually dressed pretty nicely?" jongin's nose scrunched up as he watched soojung fix the tie around sehun's neck.

"jongin, be nice. he seems to really like this girl." after finishing up his tie, soojung took a step back, smiling proudly. "is this how mothers feel when they send their sons off to the army? i'm like proud. you know,i always thought you and jongin were gay for each--"

"soojung, please." sehun groaned, shaking his head a little as jongin pushed the back of soojung's head. instead of growling like she usually would have, soojung simply ruffled sehun’s hair into place, patting him on the back. “good luck!”

“thanks.” a nervous smile formed on his face as he left jongin and his apartment. hopefully this was gonna be a good night.

thirty minutes into the movie, and hyeri seemed to be engrossed. maybe taking a girl to see ‘the fault in our stars’ wasn’t the best idea because he actually wanted to speak to her, but she seemed way too interested in what was going on.

sehun’s read the book before, and he didn’t know what was so great about it or what made girls go wild for it. maybe that was just the power of romance novels or something. sighing, sehun leaned against the arm rest away from his date, thinking about what they could do afterwards.

what interrupted his thoughts, however, was not an idea but rather a soft hand reaching over to hold his. before he knew it, hyeri had leaned towards him, whispering to him excitedly. “i think he’s going to kiss her!”

he could catch her very quietly squealing to herself. note to self: take hyeri out to more romance movies.

she never let go of his hand until the end.

nothing really happened afterwards. sehun dropped her home, but she couldn’t stop talking about great the movie was and how she’ll probably buy it when it comes out on DVD. all he could do was smile and agree although he really didn’t know what happened to the movie. he was too busy staring at her.

upon arriving home, he immediately went towards the couch, flopping down on it. all his nerves just relaxed now. such bad timing. if he wasn’t so nervous maybe he could have initiated that hand hold or maybe even more.

jongin came out of the shower with a groan. “that face. it’s not a good one. was it bad?” sehun couldn’t help but scrunch up his face in disgust because the boy was half naked with only his pajama shorts on.

“i’ll tell you if you go in and change or something.”

“can’t. soojung fell asleep on my bed, and i’m not risking walking in there without a shirt on. i barely managed to grab these pants, man. i’ll be crashing in your room.”

“why does she always fall asleep here? what were you guys even doing anyway?” sehun raised a suspicious brow towards the other, slowly sitting up on the couch. he couldn’t help but snicker when jongin’s cheeks turned a little pink as he slapped the other across the chest.

“nothing! nothing happened, okay? now tell me what happened with you!”

“nothing really happened with us either. hyeri was so into the movie, and i was.. so into her.”

a moment of silence passed before jongin burst into laughter, clapping his hands several times. “oh my god, i think i’m ready to cry, sehun! i’m feeling the tears coming out.” the male pretended to wipe some tears from his face, earning him a kick on the leg.

“shut the fuck up, jongin. at least i haven’t been crushing on the same girl for seven years-ouch!”

okay, so maybe he deserved that one.

the next morning, sehun hesitated in front of the cafe door. he was accompanied by jongin and soojung like always, but he was too nervous to see hyeri again.

( “what if she thought i was lame because i didn’t make a move? what if she thought i was super boring, and she never wants to see me again?”
“sehun, shut the fuck up before i make you-”
“soojung, i’d love to see you try.”
“shut up, jongin, or i’ll do the same to you.”
“oh, i’d love to see that actually.” )

he walked in, taking a deep breath and staring at the counter where hyeri usually stood, frowning when he didn’t see her.

“welcome, you guys!”

the three couldn’t help but jump a little at hyeri who had walked in behind them. “i was taking out the trash, but i’ll soon be available to take you guys’ orders!”

the girl was bubbly and bright like always. ( “sometimes, i question her sanity because how is someone always smiling?” soojung put her hand over jongin’s, shutting him up. )

the trio sat down in their usual seat, but all sehun could do was tap his fingers on the table, stealing glimpses of hyeri behind the counter.

“sehun, stop. you’re making a fool out of yourself, and you’re not even speaking to her yet.”

soojung took a napkin out from her purse as well as a sharpie.

“if you’re not used to actually speaking to her, here. isn’t this how you guys used to communicate? i’m sure she’ll be delighted to actually hear something from you because from what jongin told me, apparently nothing happened? come on. you two have been constantly flirting for like four months, and you finally got the guts to ask her out, and she must have had fun! i’m saying this not even as jung soojung, your friend ever since you could swear, but as a girl. i’m sure she didn’t mind the fact that you couldn’t hold her hand or even strike up much conversation. hyeri doesn’t seem to be the one to mind.”

he stared at the girl, blinking in curiosity because when did soojung become so good with motivational speeches? but, she was right, mostly.

“yeah, you’re right.”

he quickly scribbled a i had fun last night onto the napkin before walking up to the counter. she turned around to face him, a surprised look on her face.

“oh? was i taking too long with the orders? sorry about that, the machines needed some fixing, and all the staff is in the back like sleeping or something-”

before she could go on more about her fellow workers, he handed her the napkin. her eyes widened a little more before she took it with a smile. when she didn’t say anything back, sehun silently cursed to himself and was ready to head back.

before he could move, hyeri leaned in to give him a quick peck on the cheek.

“i had fun too, sehun-ah.”

he stood there, staring at her, his eyes getting almost as wide as her’s did. a shy smile formed on his face as he could feel himself burning up a little.

her little peck was probably what pushed him to act up next.

just as she was about to head back to the machines to probably finish up their orders, sehun leaned across the counter to grab her hand, the other reaching behind her neck, pulling their lips together.

they stood like that for a moment, ignoring soojung and jongin’s obnoxious cheering. when he finally pulled away, nothing seemed to be nervewrecking anymore.

“that’s what i wanted to do yesterday, but i couldn’t. let me make it up to you? dinner. tomorrow. 7:30?”

hyeri nibbled on her bottom lip before shyly nodding. “yeah, i’d love to.”

( “oh damn, sehun’s got it going on now.”

he simply chuckled to himself as he couldn’t stop staring at hyeri who kept fumbling with their drinks. he couldn’t help but find everything she did absolutely adorable now.

“earth to sehun!”

he snapped back to reality upon hearing soojung’s voice, raising a brow. “what?”

“oh, it’s nothing. it’s nice to see you in love.” soojung spoke in a teasing tone, wiggling her finger in front of sehun’s face. she seemed to be as excited as he was.

“well you know, soojung. maybe your love isn’t too far either.”

sehun coughed his throat as he stared at jongin who was too busy on his phone to realize what was going on. he’s been zoning out on the whole conversation. no wonder he was shocked when he realized that both his best friends were staring at him.

“what did i do?” he raised his hands up in the air, looking at both of them with a scared look on his face.

“nothing. you did absolutely nothing, you moron.” sehun shook his head before patting his best friend’s back. “maybe one day you’ll actually get the courage.”

soojung couldn’t help but gasp at their conversation. “wait? jongin likes somebody? what! you guys never told me!” she squealed in joy, clapping her hands together. “who is it? who’s the special girl?”

sehun and jongin looked at each other, the former bursting out into laughter as the latter’s face turned bright red. “n-no one. it’s no one.”

“you’ll find out one day, soojung. trust me.” )
