So, we went all the way to Silverstone Circuit (Northampton) to see Kaiser Chiefs last night!
It was a fairly early start with the Kaisers taking the stage at 8pm. I'll get my only negative comments out of the way first. Number 1: I didn't like the venue. I've never really been a fan of outdoor gigs because the sound always seems to get away. Number 2: the people in our section of the crowd were really boring! No-one danced and barely anyone sang! I think maybe some people had tickets to the whole Silverstone racing car weekend which must have included seeing the Kaisers because some of them didn't really seem like they wanted to be there. Nearer the front seemed to have a much better atmosphere. In hindsight maybe she should have tried to get a bit closer? Hopefully the crowd at the O2 in February will be more enthusiastic.
Now onto the good stuff! The band themselves performed really well - and lead singer, Ricky Wilson, had a ridiculous amount of energy on stage. He was jumping around all over the staged and climbing all over the speakers and rigging. I honestly spent a lot of the time worrying that he was gonna fall off and hurt himself! It was nice to see someone enjoying performing though, I just wish the people around us shared the same kind of energy.
As I said previously they started fairly early and came on stage at 8pm and started with "Every Day I Love You Less and Less" and played a nice mixture of old and new before finishing just after 9.15pm with "Oh My God". The track list included classics "Everything Is Average Nowadays", "Na Na Na Na Naa", "Never Miss A Beat", "The Angry Mob" and, of course "Ruby" and "I Predict A Riot". They also performed some songs from the new album, "Education, Education, Education and War" (out now), were "The Factory Gates", "Misery Company", "Bows & Arrows" and singles "Coming Home" and "Meanwhile Up In Heaven". All songs were performed with the same amount of crazy energy and sometimes Ricky almost shouted the lyrics but it worked for the songs because they're all pretty anthemic. The band played together really well too and the others didn't seem to mind Ricky taking the spot light.
I think the highlights for me were "Bows & Arrows" (one of my favourites on the new album), "The Angry Mob" and, the obvious choices, "Ruby" and "I Predict A Riot". I was a little bit disappointed that they didn't do "Cannons" from the new album. I think that's a great song and would be a great single.
It was a good evening and the early start and finish times meant we got home at a decent hour - oh, and Ricky kept talking about it being the beginning of the weekend so this morning I woke up and thought it was Saturday. Imagine my disappointment when I realised it was actually Friday and I had to get up and go to work - I'm looking forward to seeing them again at an indoor venue. Looking forward to next February. I think I might want a Kaisers shirt - there's some in the sale on their website. Might be tempted.
