rowing

Today was one of the most extreme turnarounds of thought I've had in my life. At crew I sculled- sculling is two oars, one in each hand, while sweeping is just one (I'm usually a starboard when I sweep, which means your oar goes out to the left). It was the third time I've sculled in my life, the second being last week and the first in August. In the beginning (today) it was hell. I had a lot of trouble with my port oar because I'm not used to it, I couldn't bring my hands all the way in or I would fuck up the recovery, and no matter how high I tried to raise the oar coming back up, the port side continually seemed to catch on the water. You're using both hands simultaneously so it is impossibly to stop to scratch your nose, take the strand of hair out of your mouth, or just move your hands around because they get so stiff and hurt like hell after ten or fifteen minutes of straight rowing. I let the water, my oar and especially my head get the best of me. I was wearing shorts and oh, it was cooooolld and my legs and hands were wet and I was pissed off and in pain and decided I hated sculling.

When stern pair dropped out the kid in front of me was leading the boat, and he was WAY too fast- going up the slide on the recovery was just as fast as the stroke! It was ridiculous, but I decided I would go with it and just sped up to accomodate his rating and went all out and really got the full stroke in, and I had almost no trouble from there on out, and when I did I just said focus and I was able to fix it rather quickly. The improvement in form and ability over five or ten minutes, switching from half slide to full slide, was astounding, that's just the only word I can use that makes sense; it was not working before and then it was and was wonderful. I thought "look what I can do! look what I'm capable of!" and more than that, just god, look how much power I have sitting here, and I was in such a great mental state, I need to be in it more often.

And I will be back on the water in 12 hours (or, um, TEN. And I'll be awake and on the train in nine...)

justcallmefunk: AND AMADEUS PUNCHED MY STOMACH
justcallmefunk: it was weird
justcallmefunk: but not hard
Glenn: lol
Glenn: wtf
Glenn: why'd he do that
Glenn: were you chasing him too closely
justcallmefunk: i dunno he was coming up the stairs and made some noise and did it, i mean it didnt hurt AT ALL, he barely touched me
justcallmefunk: it was just funny
justcallmefunk: HAHAHAHA
Glenn: oh, so he touched you, that's all that matters
justcallmefunk: you finally understand!
