I love making hats. They're really so easy. I'm making tiny girl a tiny-ish hat right now, concurrently with all my other projects. I've attached the crown of a tiny decorative (or large doll?) hat to the outer part of a braided straw place mat. I may have made the brim a bit large, but I also want to keep the sun off as much as possible. I soaked ( Read more... )

I decided I needed a black straw hat, so I dyed a hat blank with some Rit. I also found a placemat with funky straw trim that I also dyed and added to my hat. I was skeptical of the dying process because it took quite a while for the dye to really take, but I got a very good black I think. I want to shellac the hat before wearing it to prevent dye ( Read more... )

I've been silent but not inactive.

As you may remember, I was transforming this hat, because the size and decoration no longer suited me. I chose a red striped ribbon to decorate the crown, but it still seemed a bit off. After soaking it and shaping it, I think I've got it under control.

Things seem very busy lately. I think it's the holidays and the fact that DH has been under foot since Tuesday. Despite that, I've managed to put up the Christmas tree and work on several projects:

Wig - I'm going to try to make DH a period wig using human hair from two wiglets. They aren't very long, but I think they'll work with some hairspray. ( Read more... )

I made a hat for the theoretical striped 1790s dress. I used the hat in my icon as inspiration for putting taffeta on the underside of the brim. It looks different because of the way the light is hitting it, but the taffeta on the brim is the same as that of the crown. The feathers are just stuck in and could stand to be arranged better.

I still need to trim the opening, but it's finished for all intents and purposes. The result isn't exactly what I wanted, but I guess it's not too bad considering I had no pattern and no idea what I was doing. I should have had more of a curve to the brim, but it seemed to get flatter the more I worked with it for some reason. Next time I'll cut it ( Read more... )
