Somehow, while innocuously looking up the ending of Shadow of the Colossus, I ended up revisiting my love of Kushana from Nausicaa (the manga, mind you), finding out that CLAMP has a new series set in Kyoto and is full of amazing magic and things that I love, started plotting yet another AU Sailormoon that would actually turn parts of my unfinished NaNo project into a better story, and stumbled upon this page of
essays. Now, if you're too lazy to click the link, here are some of titles:
Strong Female Characters: Feminism and the Ladies of Final Fantasy
Challenging Auteurship: Dōjinshi as Creative Fan Interpretation
Pokémon as Japanese Literature
What Is Moe?: A Visual Essay on the Aesthetics of Fantasy
Kazuo Ishiguro and the Problem of “Japaneseness”
Have only skimmed through the Feminism in FF one, but it's a very interesting read so far, analyzing Rydia of FF4, Aerith of FF7, and then Fran of FF12. LOL, apparently FF7 actually passes the Bechdel Test XDD Really great links on the
last page to other essays like
The Rise and Fall of Final Fantasy.
(The last one listed above I've only skimmed, but seems like something I'd be interested in reading more closely as it deals with assigning/appropriating culture. The comments are also interesting, touching on issues that
greywing and I have talked about in podcast about the level of distance one can have from one's own ethnicity, the inability of Asians to be considered "truly" American.)
Anyway, if you've time this weekend, go through those essays! Someone tell me how the Pokemon one is XD
[ETA] Oh no, and now I found a page with short essays dedicated to
Fruits Basket. OMG, there apparently is a short post drawing similarities between HP and FB:
Harry and Tom and Tohru and Akito. I NEED MORE TIME TO READ THINGS OMG
