Eve and I hit the road straight from work on Friday. We went south down 75 past the big mosque, past touchdown jesus and eventually came to Wakefield, Ohio (a suburb of Cincinnati).
We had a good time hanging with my family, Eve fits in very well with everybody. The reading contest drew to a close and some lucky jerk was declared "master of readology" for the next year (you're reading his blog). My mom made everyone participation certificates and bought prizes. It was very cute.
Saturday all the big kids hit the town of Newport, KY (right across the river, it's where all the cool stuff to do is). We went to the Hofbrauhaus and had fine Bavarian cuisine and beers. After that we went to the Claddagh Irish Pub which is right on the River (after deciding that the $5 cover for another bar was stupid). It was a fine night filled with merriment, Jagermeister, and Irish Car Bombs...just like Kriegers do.
Sunday, Eve went to her first Lutheran Church service. She didn't burst into flames or have any difficulties passing for Protestant. The pastor even asked afterwards if he'd met her before, she blends very well. To be fair, I did teach her a few good phrases to help her act natural:
- "Boy, I sure do hate indulgences and purgatory."
- "Do you have any extra mayonnaise for this salad? I've got a potluck to attend."
- "Do you already have plans for this Reformation Sunday?"
Worked like a charm.
We got an invitation for dinner from her parents while making our return north. Fina was even included in the summons to dinner. However, I made an executive decision that she should be rewarded for all of her self-control while at Rachel and Joshua's house (they have two cats that she really wanted to play with but didn't) and left her at home to rest and stretch out. Dinner was good, filet mignon and over roasted potatoes.
Monday I had a bbq at my house. Eve helped me put together a menu, KJPM and Peter came over with Moose, Telly, Khad and Khad's lady friend in tow (a girl named Kelly who once upon a time was a student of Eve's - that wasn't weird for anyone). Greg and Chrysta came by a little later to round out our bunch. It was a lot of fun and our menu, while not particularily ambitious (crab cakes, black and bleu burgers, brats, potatoes and corn) kept us full and happy. We bailed on extending our evening much past 9, and though Eve and I felt pretty old we still were satisfied with our decision.
I've added another 20 hours at another job this week and next. It is my hope that working at Ned's will allow me to buy some toys. I need to do something while Eve is at school slaving over her AP lesson mapping.
This weekend she and I are going to be hanging out with some teachers, having dinner with her folks, seeing the Hard Lessons at the Blind Pig, and maybe other things as well. Fun, fun stuff.
Finally - for those of you who don't know what I'm able to teach (and I was surprised by the range myself) I'm going to post all the possibilities. If you hear something form someone about *needing a highly qualified teacher for _____ class* give me a hollar.
