Frozen in a Moment

There were people all around, yet all Blair could hear was silence. Sitting in the waiting room, he'd given up pacing the floor and finally sat cross-legged on a couch. Closing his eyes, he tried meditating, but all he could see was Jim's face and the blood. There was so much blood.
Looking out of the big window, he saw the rain coming down in sheets. Fellow officers were everywhere, but none of them crossed into his space. As the rain cascaded down, his eyes found a space between and the scene played itself out with his memory attempting to work out pieces to make them fit together. One moment, he and Jim had the mad man cornered and the next Jim was falling in slow motion against him.
He reacted as he was trained. His hand came up and fired in the direction of the gun shot taking out the woman who'd shot his partner. Another gun fired somewhere beyond and then the world erupted in chaos.
Blair saw himself in the ambulance, holding Jim's hand and trying his best to talk him through it. But, there was so much blood and Jim wasn't moving.
A hand touched his shoulder, shaking Blair from his reverie. He knew the touch and stood up. Without explanation or the need for words, he wrapped his arms around his boss and friend, Captain Simon Banks.
"How is...," he heard Simon say.
"Surgery," Blair answered, as the wall between him and the rest of the world collapsed.
