I grew up learning that a big part of the horror of war is what it turns people into, and that soldiers are scary.
There's a fantastic book by a ex-war correspondant named Chris Hedges called "War Is a Force Which Goves Our Lives Meaning" which deals with this issue in a fantastic way.
I read it when I was working on a project last year dealing with Gulf War (take 1) vets. He really fantastically captures and explains the adrenaline/extreme circtumstance addiction that happens to people in war zones. That addiction, on top of the brain washing that EVERY government employs to convince their soldiers that the enemy are not PEOPLE (and therefore that it is ok to kill them) - turns soldiers away from their own humanity.
And then they come home. And they are all fucked up. And not in a sexy way at all.
I don't know why that knowledge doesn't cross over into my sense of what Sheppard is doing in that episode, though. I mean, obviously I am watching/reading as recreation - so I don't tend to dwell on the weightier side of things when I could be thinking about the way his biceps flex when he lifts his gun...
It's just the split between fantasy and reality, I guess...

Oh, definitely. The split between fantasy and reality is probably wider for me than most people, even, because my fantasies tend to be kinky, and in real life, I'm pretty boring and vanilla.
So, yes, I have to admit that sometimes Sheppard is so much hotter than he should be. Are you reading seperis Crimes against Humanity? It should not be hot. But it is.
But if I met him in real life, with his P90 and sidearm and knives and the seventy or so people he's killed? Really not so much.
You know - I started out totally enthused about Crimes Against Humanity, and my desire for more just sort of trickled away.
I think it's because I am dying for more 8 Year Old John from her, and I know that Crimes... must be delaying any further update on the fic I really love.
re: the seventy people he killed- see, but the thing is, those people were coming to torture Rodney. That's what makes it hot, right? Not the killing so much as the protecting.

I started out totally unenthused, and now I'm starting to like it more and more. Because it's so centered on the Rodney/John relationship now, and John going completely over the top to protect Rodney, and you're right, that's the real hot thing.
