Catholic Portugal, traditionally one of Europe's most socially conservative countries, is expected to approve the legalisation of gay marriage on Friday with a minimum of fuss. -- AFP

That will increase to eight the number of countries in which same-sex marriage has been legalized throughout the country.

Meanwhile, after a series of twisting and turning down little passages, all different, the New Jersey Senate is expected to vote on equal marriage rights tomorrow (Thursday). No one is very excited about it that I can tell, as all reports indicate that it will fail (but likely by less votes than in the New York Senate). Still, the fact that it was brought up for a vote at all means there is some probability that it could pass. At least two more Republican votes (besides John Bill Boroni, who voted aye in committee) are needed for passage.
