Two fighter jets under NORAD command were scrambled to intercept a Hawaiian airlines plane and escort it back to Portland after

an uncooperative passenger made threatening remarks and refused to store his carry-on bag

Keoni Wagner, a Hawaiian airlines spokesperson said

the airline was "surprised" by the response.

The only conceivable use I can think of for fighters would be to shoot down the plane before it plunges into a very large building with thousands of people, or some choice target like a nuclear reactor. Which is why cockpits are now sealed, so that this sort of thing can't happen any more.

I suppose they could have been thinking they had to defend the US against Putin's head, but they were still quite a ways away from Alaska.
