Power Gone

Some strong thunderstorms moved through the Indianapolis area on Friday night. My brother Ron and I spent some time sitting in our garage with the door up just watching it all, since we both love storms. I went to get ready for bed around 9:30 pm, and just as I finished brushing my teeth, we lost our electricity. I managed to grope my way back to the living room, and my brother and I got out our flashlights and lit some candles. I waited a few minutes, but when the power didn't come back on quickly, I went on to bed.

Saturday morning dawned sunny and beautiful, but still no power. I went out to get Ron and I some breakfast, since we didn't want to open the refrigerator and let out what cool might still be there. We sat around for awhile, and then went ahead with doing some yard work we had planned. What made the power loss especially bad was that we are on a well and septic system. No electricity means no water either, since the pump can't run. We were both a sweaty, dirty mess when we finished in the yard, so we decided to get a hotel room a few miles away where the power was ok.

We went over and checked in at a nice LaQuinta, took showers and got cleaned up, then relaxed. After we went out for dinner, Ron made arrangements to meet some friends of his at a local track to see some racing. I headed back to the hotel and just vegged out watching tv. Ron decided to sleep at the house, but called to let me know the power still wasn't on.

I got up around 7:00 am on Sunday, and Ron called almost exactly an hout later to say the electricity had just come back on. Once, I got home we checked the refrigerator and freezer, and found a couple of things we felt it was safer to toss out. By and large, though, the food damage wasn't too bad. All things considered, our inconvenience was minor. Just a couple of miles from our house, a roof was blown off, billboards were shredded, and trees were blown down.
