Since I'm still job searching, it's nice that Jessica doesn't teach on Thursdays. It's like an early Saturday (unless she has a meeting or something else that requires her to go into work). Yesterday was one of those days.
The bulk of the morning and early afternoon were spent at the ice arena. Jessica was testing and I went along to film her. It was quite a bit of waiting for only about eight minutes of recorded material, but we just hung out while waiting for her to do her moves testing and then again later before her program. I also brought along a sudoku book which I'd not played in nearly a year. She did well and passed both. We also dined on hard candy and chocolate brownie cake.
After running by the post office to mail something directly so it wouldn't get wet in our mailbox in the snow and dropping off two free movies at Blockbuster (L'enfant and Capote), we went home and had lunch. Jessica fell asleep but I had to run some more errands. Jessica gets paid on the first of the month and the water bill was due on the first, so I had to go to city hall to pay it in person rather than to try a timed mailing that would be certain to fail. I also had to stop by American Family Insurance because I had an online bill that wasn't showing up online. The only problem with the errands was that the snow had turned to sleet, but neither place was far and I was back within a half hour.
A little bit later we did one of my favorite things: went for a walk in the woods while it was snowing right at dusk. I just love the darkened setting of hushed snow in a forest. That's my idyllic setting for a fairy tale. There were drifts on the north crest of the hill which came up to my thighs; those were fun to wade through. We were able to make a tunnel in one that we could see through. Jessica, suited up in her snowpants, made a snow angel. A wonderful walk.
That evening we watched The Departed. It was solid movie, but I'm sure there were other pictures out last year which were more deserving of the Best Picture award. If you plan on watching it, can you count how many times someone says "Go f*** yourself"? It must be the motto of Boston.
It was snowing all morning so I took my computer to the dining room table so I could job search while watching the snow fall. I also got to see who it is that took a snow blower down the block after these two recent storms. I forget his name, but Jessica and I always chit chat with his wife if we walk by their house and she in the yard with their young son. I think I'll make them some cookies or something, because it's much better than having to shovel a half foot of snow myself.
After it stopped snowing I had to go out and shovel the driveway. I got an upclose look at the sidewalk. The stratum of snow and ice are clearly exposed. The dense, bottom half is what we got last week. We got a foot, but most melted with the sun and temperature just above freezing. Then on that is a layer of ice, a small layer of snow, another layer of ice, and a top layers of snow:
