Peter is developing as a person very well indeed thatnks to Elias and Ruby, Rose would be very proud. I was so chuffed that Elias classes Peter as a friend and I've a feeling that is something Peter hasn't had in a long time.
This story is settling in very well indeed I love it almost as much as TWOT

He is. It's remarkable what encouragement--and friendship--can do.

As you point out--it's been a very long time indeed since Peter's had someone who could truly be called "friend".

Brilliant. Love the diner and how well the three of them are getting along. Also looking forward to the first time Rose meets Elias and Ruby.

Love the dinner

Thank you! It was good for Peter to get out and have a proper meal with Ruby and Elias; and it was a fun way to mirror the first dinner he had with Elias, waaaaay back at the beginning of the story :)

Also looking forward to the first time Rose meets Elias and Ruby.

That'll appear in this story, have no worries.

Oooh, first page even! prynne12 August 14 2008, 11:28:02 UTC
I love how Peter almost seemed to be indulging his inner teenage girl--he goes from feeling inadequate to the task of working with the Met in London to convincing himself he's better off not going anyway because he's better in Kendal. I love it!

More to the point, I love the fact that he's feeling comfortable enough with Rose to invite Elias and Ruby out for a get-together while he's in her milieu.

Ruby, incidentally, is fast becoming a favorite of mine. I love how she can say the most inappropriate things.

And lastly--I wish I were good enough with images to construct a LolPeter--because I just want to squeal a bit that "Peter has a friend!"

And clearly, I'm running on not enough sleep or caffeine this morning!

They do say "write what you know"; it's been years since I was a teenager, but, y'know... ;)

Peter's got so many coping mechanisms whirring away in the background, it's almost ridiculous. But I think it's really the only way he's managed to keep functioning in the dysfunction of NLC.

I love the fact that he's feeling comfortable enough with Rose to invite Elias and Ruby out

Oh yes. What's always cracked me up about him inviting Elias and Ruby out isn't that he's worried about Rose, or what she'll think; he's not. He's worried about what Ruby--and, by extension, Elias--will think.

I love how she can say the most inappropriate things.

She's one of those lucky people who says those things with such charm, that folks only rarely get offended.

I'm running on not enough sleep or caffeine this morning!

I just made a pot of coffee for the office. *passes huge mug of steaming brew*

::accepts gratefully:: Though--anyone whom I may encounter during the day is really unlikely to thank you for caffeinating me!

Peter's got so many coping mechanisms whirring away in the background, it's almost ridiculous. But I think it's really the only way he's managed to keep functioning in the dysfunction of NLC. Indeed--or rather, so many "lack-of-actual-coping" coping mechanisms, almost all of which being unhealthy of course. Why is it that when we develop these things, they're never healthy ( ... )

Why is it that when we develop these things, they're never healthy?

It's so unfair, isn't it? *sigh*

Oh, and what's an ASBO?

From the trusty wiki: anti-social behaviour order

Oh, incidentally, the first part of the Eliot fic is up at Teaspoon

Ah, excellent!

It was on the third day-well, night really, as it happened at three in the morning--that someone did something stupid

so, do we ever get to hear what that something stupid was? did they try to take out Judy? Did they try to sell her drugs?

He suspected that a better detective might have been able to do that; he once again pondered if he was half so good a DI as he thought he was. If he wasn’t...if he was only good because of where he was...

Forget the self esteem fairy, I think Peter's got a doom fairy glommed onto him, either that or the cloud of doom from Dilbert. I kind of want to huggle him or whack him in the back of the head.

“Don’t be stupid, Peter.”

I know this has been said a million times and it will be said a million times more. I love Elias.

He wasn’t going to quit the police services; he likely wasn’t going to be leaving Kendal any time soon. It was a theoretical exercise, brought about because he was feeling inadequate, and he’d no doubt be just fine after a visit with Rose or a good night’s sleep, or- ( ... )

so, do we ever get to hear what that something stupid was?

You don't, so I'll answer here: they tried to take out both Judy and the GGC person. They broke into the house in the dead of night; the GGC rep was actually armed, although he didn't need the weapon--Judy could take care of herself, and was able to fight the guys off long enough for the officer to weigh in and beat the ever-loving snot out of them.

Being goons--and only goons--they rolled pretty quickly, giving the Met what they needed to issue warrants and haul people in.

I kind of want to huggle him or whack him in the back of the head.

I tend towards "whacking him on the back of the head" at this point in his life.

I can just see him looking like a confused and befuddled otter or meerkat here.

Hee!

a sure sign that he's truly grown comfortable around them.

Indeed--although I think he's been sneaking jokes in around Elias ever since the house incident.

there's a great possibility we'll get a more detailed description of Rose's flat ... I go to Greenwich a lot ( ... )

Thanks for the fill in with Judy. I know it's not super important to the story line in the long run and it's nice of you to indulge our curiosities.

Another author will--hopefully--soon be posting a story about Peter's first visit to London

ooOOooh. I shall look forward to that.

At this point, Rose is still living in Southwark

lucky Rose. It's a nice place, though a bit noisy cause of the rails and water traffic. I walk by there to go to the market I bet she gets her food at Borough market..if they have it in PW *ponders making a dutch cheese booth run*

You make your own proper bagels? *is seriously impressed*

My Dad taught me bread making in high school and I've kind of been a bread snob since. I know a lot of people get intimidated by making it, but it's not that hard or scary, most of the time it's just sitting there rising. Also a great stress reliever, nothing like pounding a ball of dough and listening to Exile on Main Street :)

They have Borough Market--and Rose goes there, whenever she's feeling adventurous enough to cook *g*

Left us all hanging there.

Peter didn’t mind not playing hero-his encounter with the bomb had reminded him that he’d never really had a taste for derring-do
Just picturing him dressed as a super hero now.

He suspected that a better detective might have been able to do that; he once again pondered if he was half so good a DI as he thought he was. If he wasn’t...if he was only good because of where he was...would he ever be able to learn to be better?
And it starts again. When's he going to get it through his thick head that he does a good job?

was he stifled because of where he was; would he, given a more challenging environment (he ignored the little voice that suggested London), grow to become the detective he hoped he was, instead of the detective everyone else saw him as?
I think he'd be up for the challenge.

spending much of the morning interrogating Wilson and Phillips, extracting a confession and ( ... )

Left us all hanging there.

It's addressed in an earlier reply ;)

Which did which?

Wilson 'fessed up, Phillips was silent.

I'd love to see something from Elias' POV pondering the mystery of Peter Carlisle.

Hmmm. I'll have to see what my subconscious comes up with on this.

Would he consider working at a museum or something after he retires from the police?

I think it would depend on how crotchety he is ;)

Would love to be a fly on the wall there.

It'll pop up during the story.

Just 'cause he doesn't want to brag?

Nope--because he should have been promoted again by this point.
