It was on the third day-well, night really, as it happened at three in the morning--that someone did something stupid

so, do we ever get to hear what that something stupid was? did they try to take out Judy? Did they try to sell her drugs?

He suspected that a better detective might have been able to do that; he once again pondered if he was half so good a DI as he thought he was. If he wasn’t...if he was only good because of where he was...

Forget the self esteem fairy, I think Peter's got a doom fairy glommed onto him, either that or the cloud of doom from Dilbert. I kind of want to huggle him or whack him in the back of the head.

“Don’t be stupid, Peter.”

I know this has been said a million times and it will be said a million times more. I love Elias.

He wasn’t going to quit the police services; he likely wasn’t going to be leaving Kendal any time soon. It was a theoretical exercise, brought about because he was feeling inadequate, and he’d no doubt be just fine after a visit with Rose or a good night’s sleep, or-preferably-both in rapid succession.

Even though this whole section is rather cynical, it does show progress for Peter. He's recognized that he is just feeling down and what's more, he's starting to think beyond kendal, beyond what he did in blackpool, and that has to count for something, even if he is feeling inadequate.

And Ruby’ll have my head if you don’t show.

and we wouldn't want that happening, now would we? ;)

Peter blinked. Elias considered him a friend

I can just see him looking like a confused and befuddled otter or meerkat here. hee.

but had agreed to meet Peter for a cup of coffee the following morning.

we'll have to wait till monday for this, yes?

“It’s why Rose dates me,” he offered tentatively.

Ruby and Elias stared at him, dumbfounded, and he grinned.

“Peter Carlisle. You made a joke!” Ruby said, only half-kidding.

awww. a sure sign that he's truly grown comfortable around them.

“Would you...I mean, if you’d like...when I’m next in London, maybe you’d like to have dinner with Rose and I?”

careful Peter, inviting people to dinner? Rose'll have to get your head checked.

“How long have you been a detective?”

I smell a rat. a big fluffy rat that hires DIs and promises better station coffee, work partners and being in a closer vicinity to Rose ;) or maybe I'm seeing things and they're just curious.

Elias periodically sighed indulgently, clearly used to his wife’s enthusiasm for all things historical.

hee. I can see this driving him mad, esp if they were on a case and Peter just HAD to take a picture or get a pamphlet on some historical building, lest Ruby kill him for not taking the opportunity.

Lovely chapter, It's good to see Peter on a more even keel, even if he is feeling a bit cynical at his skills. And he's pretty much assured of going to London to help on a successful case. Not only will he get to see Rose, he gets to do it and seriously piss off Williams at the same time.

Okay, silly to admit, but I aside from Peter seeing Rose, I'm kind of excited he's going down cause it means there's a great possibility we'll get a more detailed description of Rose's flat. I know this sounds silly, but after I went to Kendal, I reread TWOT and it definitely changed the way I saw it in my head. I go to Greenwich a lot, so I can also imagine them walking around there, but I haven't ever managed to grasp Rose's flat. erm okay, that's my rant for the day. Off to finish boiling my bagels. Have a good weekend, I can't wait till Monday!

so, do we ever get to hear what that something stupid was?

You don't, so I'll answer here: they tried to take out both Judy and the GGC person. They broke into the house in the dead of night; the GGC rep was actually armed, although he didn't need the weapon--Judy could take care of herself, and was able to fight the guys off long enough for the officer to weigh in and beat the ever-loving snot out of them.

Being goons--and only goons--they rolled pretty quickly, giving the Met what they needed to issue warrants and haul people in.

I kind of want to huggle him or whack him in the back of the head.

I tend towards "whacking him on the back of the head" at this point in his life.

I can just see him looking like a confused and befuddled otter or meerkat here.

Hee!

a sure sign that he's truly grown comfortable around them.

Indeed--although I think he's been sneaking jokes in around Elias ever since the house incident.

there's a great possibility we'll get a more detailed description of Rose's flat ... I go to Greenwich a lot, so I can also imagine them walking around there, but I haven't ever managed to grasp Rose's flat.

Two things, here: 1. Another author will--hopefully--soon be posting a story about Peter's first visit to London. Which will address a little bit more about the flat. Short answer: it's a one-bedroom, one-bath, with a nice kitchen, and a living room that has a dining nook. I have a drawing of it somewhere...I'll have to hunt around for it.
2. At this point, Rose is still living in Southwark; she and Peter don't move to Greenwich until after they marry. The building I've always imagined Rose living in is the Oxo Tower, right on the river. :)

Off to finish boiling my bagels.

You make your own proper bagels? *is seriously impressed*

Thanks for the fill in with Judy. I know it's not super important to the story line in the long run and it's nice of you to indulge our curiosities.

ooOOooh. I shall look forward to that.

At this point, Rose is still living in Southwark

lucky Rose. It's a nice place, though a bit noisy cause of the rails and water traffic. I walk by there to go to the market I bet she gets her food at Borough market..if they have it in PW *ponders making a dutch cheese booth run*

My Dad taught me bread making in high school and I've kind of been a bread snob since. I know a lot of people get intimidated by making it, but it's not that hard or scary, most of the time it's just sitting there rising. Also a great stress reliever, nothing like pounding a ball of dough and listening to Exile on Main Street :)

They have Borough Market--and Rose goes there, whenever she's feeling adventurous enough to cook *g*

They sell the best cheese toasties there, and lots of other tasty prepared food, so I'm pretty sure she'd indulge every once in a while. And I think Peter would pretty much be in heaven once he set foot there.....can I request a Peter goes to Borough Market for the first time fic?

I see Peter as a bit pigpen and a bit, oh damn... what's the character in Pogo that has a cloud over his head all the time ? *damn* my brain went dead... but you know who I mean... sort of a mix of the two of them when he gets in this mood.

and the whack on the back of the head, ala Mark Harmon's character in NCIS ! YES !

A Pogo reference, I'm feeling very young now. hmmm. Maybe Porky Pine? he was always kind of grumpy/gloomy, at least in the few strips I've seen. Definitely a whack on the head, I'm pretty sure one day we'll get to live it vicariously through Ruby ;)
