I also think it is great that you were allowed to troop at a '501st' event as Leia. I think the 501st here misses the big picture sometimes. I mean, there are little girls who like Leia. Life is too short to get bull headed and petty, especially when we are supposed to be doing these charity events to make other people (like kids) happy! I wish our garrison could learn by your example. At least I know the 501st as a whole does not take the rigid position our garrison does so I don't feel so bad about being part of the organization as a whole.
I totally agree with you about the 501st allowing rebels! Star Wars isn't just about the bad guys, and people love to see both goodies and baddies fromt he movies, it really gives them a better experience. We have exactly the same problem here with TAG (And particularly the redback squad here in Qld). I think it really comes down to the people in the particular Garrison or squad. If they're pigheaded arrogant bastards (which unfortunately is what most of our group here is made of) then all they care about is armour, and they couldn't give a rats about any other character. Unless it's their girlfriend's wearing a Slave Leia bikini. I'm really upset by the fact that to join the 501st (when I finish my clonetrooper) I have to join and troop with the idiots of TAG (not all of them, but the vast majority). It really ruins what is supposed to be a fun hobby, and totally disregards the fact that it's not about us, it's about the people who really get a kick out of us dressing up for their event .
Yup, I kind of agree. There are some people who think that Armor or anything 'bad guy' is superior and presume that just because it is their favorite and more popular with the men, that is what everyone wants to see. And I think there are others that take what the 501st is too literally (a club for Imperials - no rebels allowed at OUR events
( ... )
I think that is a real shame your Garrison holds that attitude. I found alot of people like that in Florida for Star Wars Weekends. They seem to always find something wrong with any of the non armored characters. I feel so lucky to be in this Garrison.
I think it does have something to do with the leaders though, our CO Cher mostly dresses as Leia. And the founder of the 501st is in the Carolina Garrison. He still holds true to what the organization was formed for, having fun and making people happy.
I'm really sorry your Garrison is like that. Maybe if you get enough people to realize the problem you could have a talk with the people in charge. Maybe one or two don't matter to them, but if there is a significant amount of the Garrison coming forth they might listen a bit more.
And thanks for your compliments on my fabrics. I haven't seen them yet but I'm really excited about getting them. I'm really hoping to have the dress done by D*Con '08 but I'm not going to kill myself to get it down. Just taking it nice and slow now.
As I posted in the reply to Kay_dee, you are so lucky that your 501st lets you troop as Leia!
Those Padme fabrics look great! Especially the gold crinkle! I really love that it's gold and not yellow :D MAkes me glad that I definitely decided to make this costume! :D I think I'll be ordering that too! :D
I haven't seen the fabric in person yet, it was sent to my house, not my school, but I think they look fantastic. I can't wait to see them.
By looking at them I do think the Crinkle is the best option. I think I figured for the skirt and blouse I'd need about 10 yards of each so I'd be around $100 (American) for the crinkled silk. It's expensive but totally worth the money to get the accurate fabric.
I'm so excited you are making this costume too! We can help each other on the way to our great picnic gowns. :D
