At this point I assumed my mood would have balanced... but I was wrong, but, I feel an obligation to post and intend to do so. I just hope I am not entirely too whiny.
• I first encountered Crane on CB (Citizens Band) Radio Channel 14 (27.125 Mhz to the best of my recollection) where he was J & B on the Rocks (his fave Scotch on ice) and I was the "Boston Strangler" (Never been to Boston... just loved the illustration on a book on the subject of that murderer).
• Crane and I first met in person, after talking on CB, at Thunderbird Lanes bowling alley in Phoenix... where he was an absolute guru on one of the first pinball games with more than one ball. Have no idea what the game was (Way before Gorgar and all the crap after) but he could play for hours on two quarters.
• He had a CB radio... no idea the manufacturer's name... but its model was Challenger and we used it to track down meet "J", who I have posted about before, and is now my oldest living friend.
• When I married Sue I first asked Crane to be my best man.... he declined because he had been best man before and felt he would jinx our marriage (he'd been a best man before and the marriage did not last).
• I went to the Chinese Labor Day bowling tourney twice... both times as Crane's teammate and both times despite being a lousy bowler, I managed to win at least one side pot.
• If it was college football season and it was Saturday you could be assured Crane was watching the USC game... day in and day out he always watched the Trojans. (And, as a USC fan, he ardently assumed O.J. was innocent !)
• Speaking of weddings... Crane and I went to two weddings and two receptions on the same day (I know this because I wrote it in a diary and have the invitations to this day). Chuck (Pepsi Kid) and Cathy a.k.a. CB (Cute Butt... a well-earned monicker) and Carrie M. ( a girl I once dated) and Rick ? .
Anyhow... not much more to say than that. I have had more than ample opportunity after getting sober to seek him out and always made an excuse... always assumed there would be another day... and I was wrong. If nothing else I hope that the 1.3 people who read me might reach out to someone they have not talked to for awhile... because one day it WILL be too late.
