R.I.P. Crane Teng (1943 - 2012)

Feb 04, 2013 14:18

For a long time now I have isolated myself from the world since getting "sober". I have been meaning to check in on an old friend and for some reason did a quickie Google search to find that he had passed last May. Typical of me. He was always a very good friend to me (pretty much saved my life once upon a time) but I was not the best of friends and simply lost touch as I got to be more of a hermit. I am posting the obit here and I hope to add some personal memories and observations in a post when I can.

Crane Teng, age 68, passed away on May 30, 2012. He was born in Phoenix on June 17, 1943, to Tao and Jean Teng. He earned a Bachelor's degree in Mathematics and a Masters of Business Administration degree from the University of Southern California (USC) in Los Angeles, California. He was a founding member of Gamma Epsilon Omega fraternity at USC. He worked for a short time in Los Angeles following his graduation, before returning to Phoenix in 1973 after the death of his father, to help manage the family business. He was a member of the Chinese United Association, past President of the Chinese American Citizen Alliance (CACA). In 2009, he was instrumental in establishing a fund raiser for CACA to provide scholarships for Asian-American high school students in Phoenix. He was also a member of the Ong Ko Met Family Association. His passion in life was bowling. He was a member of the Phoenician Bowling League, the longest extension bowling league in Arizona. He served as its Secretary and Treasurer for 25 years. He was a member of the United States Bowling Congress National Bowling Tournaments for over 10 years. He won single and doubles championships in the Arizona State Open Tournaments. The highlight of his bowling career occurred three times when he bowled perfect 300 games in 2002, 2004, and 2007. He was much loved in the community. He had a special quality relating to children and was a favored, loving mentor, "fun uncle," to many young people in the community. He was a huge memorabilia and coin collector, and enjoyed fishing, hunting, rock hunting, along with searching for treasures with his metal detector. Because of his math background and fantastic memory, he was a whiz at penny slots and Keno. He will be deeply missed by his large extended family and many dearest friends. He is survived by his sister Catherine and Bill Eng, his sister Caroline and Thomas Chin, and his brother Clemente and Eva Teng. He is also survived by his nieces and nephews: Stuart and Cheryl Teng, Mitchell and Marshall Eng, Stephen Chin and Kimberly and Chris Gawrych, Amanda and Krysti Teng, and his grand-niece Cara Chin-Gawrych. He is pre-deceased by his father and mother Tao and Jean Teng and his brother and sister-in-law Clarence and Carolyn Teng. Visitation will be Thursday, June 7, 2012 from 6-8 pm at A. L. Moore Grimshaw 710 W. Bethany Home Rd., with services Friday June 8, 2012 at 11 am at Greenwood Memory Lawn Serenity Chapel 2300 W. Van Buren St. Donations can be made in memory of Crane to the Ong Ko Met Family Association, c/o Crane Teng Scholarship Fund, 2602 North 16th Street, Phoenix, Arizona 85006. www.almoore-grimshaw.com
