Chapter Seven: Best Friend
“One of the worst things in the world is, when someone makes you feel that there’s a chance when in fact there’s none.”
~*~
Jin walked closer to Kame and hugged the young man. “And I hope you will still be in the future,” Jin whispered.
Tears start to form from Kame’s eyes. “How much more pain can I handle?” He bit his lips to prevent him from crying. He wants to hug Jin back but he decided not to. He wipes the tears that are forming in his eyes. And let go from Jin’s hug. “Don’t worry, I will,” he said with a soft smile in his face.
Jin smile to Kame. “Thank you” he gladly said.
“You don’t have to,” Kame said. He wants to take back what he had said so badly. But he knows that it’s very impossible.

After an hour, there’s still no sign of Kame’s sisters knocking in front of the house. He wishes that they would arrive soon because being with Jin is not what he really wants right now.
“I guess they won’t come,” Jin said as he looked at the clock. He and Kame was in the living room as they wait for Kame’s sisters.
“Maybe they had just-,” Before Kame could say another word, the phone ring.
Kame got up from the couch and answered the call. It was his grandmother telling him that Aya and Naomi will not come home tonight. Because Aya had a fever and traveling is not such a good idea with her current condition. Kame understood and bid goodbye to his grandmother. He went back to the living room and sat on the couch.
“Who called?” Jin asked as he looked at his best friend’s sad face.
“It’s Oba-chan and she said that Aya’s sick. My sisters won’t be coming home tonight,” Kame answered.
“Sick? How is she right now?” Jin asked in a concerned tone.
“Well, Oba-chan said that Aya’s temperature had already gone down but she still needs to rest,” Kame explained.
Jin sighed in relief. “That’s good, right? At least you don’t need to worry so much,” he said as he plastered his sweet smile to Kame.
“Yeah, I think so,” Kame said, still with a sad face.
“Why are you still sad, if you know that Aya is already alright? You should be glad, you know,” Jin said.
Kame stretched his arms in the air and yawned. “I am glad. But I’m just too tired to show it. It’s been a busy day for me and I’m really exhausted right now,” he said. He wished that Jin had understood him and maybe, just maybe it will make him leave.
Jin decided to leave. He thought that Kame needs to rest now, even though it’s only fifteen minutes past seven o’clock. But he didn’t oblige himself to ask. He bid goodbye and didn’t let Kame to escort him to the train station, since he thinks that it’s dangerous for the young man to walk alone at night.

The ring from Kame’s phone suddenly woke him up from his sleep. He slowly opened his bed side lamp and took his phone. Jin.
“What is it, Jin?” Kame lazily answered the call.
“Nothing,” Jin shrugged.
“Jin, do you know what time is it?” Kame looked at his wall clock.
“Yup, it’s 1 AM,”
“And do you know what people do in this time of hour?”
“Hmm… not really”
Kame rolled his eyes. “Sleep. People are already sleeping at this time of hour”.
“So?”
Kame deeply sighed. “Jin, if you don’t have anything to say I’ll hang up”.
“Wait! Don’t!”
“…”
“I-I-I can’t sleep,” Jin reasoned out.
“You can’t? Why?” Kame asked in a concern voice. But then it changed into a cold one, when he realized something. “Is it because you are alone?”
“Kind of,” Jin answered unsurely.
Kame raised his eyebrow. “I see,” “Is it because, Naomi is not with you?”
Jin felt confused. “How on earth did Naomi get involve in our conversation?” “Ye-Yeah, I-I think so”.
“I knew it,” Kame said to himself. He felt jealous but he continued on talking nonchalantly. “Oh, I see. Then, why don’t you call her?”
“Wha-hat?” “What’s wrong with him?”
“Instead of calling me, why don’t you call her? It seems to me that you only miss her, that’s why you can’t sleep,” “Stupid Jin, calling in the middle of the night just to make me feel jealous.”
“Kame, are you alright?” Jin noticed Kame being cold to him. “Is he jealous?”
“Yeah, I’m practically fine,” Kame said as he exaggerated his voice. “You think? Moron.”
“But you’re being weird,”
“What do you mean weird?” Kame pretended that his laughing. “You are the one that is weird. You’re calling in the middle of the night just to say to me that, you miss Naomi.” Still pretending that his laughing.
“I don’t remember saying that, I miss Naomi,” Jin said as he creased his forehead. “Kame, are you… uhmm… by any chance, jealous?”
Kame gasped. “What is this guy talking about?” What are you talking about? I’m not jealous. And why would I be jealous?” he defended himself.
“Wow, chill! I was just asking. Geesh Kame, defending yourself makes me think that you’re really jealous,” Jin said as he tries himself not to giggle.
“Let me repeat what I said before. I’M NOT JEALOUS, ok?”
“Ok, relax. Take a deep breath. Inhale,” Kame exactly did what Jin had ordered him. “Exhale. Inhale. Exhale. Inhale. Exhale. In-” before Jin could continue, Kame stopped him.
“Let’s stop this inhale-exhale thing and let’s get to sleep,” Kame suggested.
“No!!”
“Why not? Jin, in case you haven’t notice… I have school tomorrow and my class starts at eight in the morning, so I really need to sleep,”
“Ok, but in one condition,”
“What condition?”
“You’re not going to end this call,”
“What? I don’t get you,”
“I just want to hear you sleeping,”
“Are you out of your mind?”
“Maybe or maybe not. So, is it a deal?”
Kame sighed. “Ok, fine. Just make me sleep already”.
“Okie dokie,” Jin said happily.
Not much further ado, Kame returned from his sleep. And as for Jin, he was happily sleeping while clinging on his phone.

Kame woke up from the sound of his alarm clock. He lazily sat up and stretched his arms. He, then, remembered his phone.
“Hello, Jin?” Kame said, thinking that Jin was already awake. “Who am I kidding? No way, he’s already awake at this early in the-,” he was cut off by a sudden familiar voice.
“Good morning, Kame,” Jin greeted.
“What? How? You’re still awake? Don’t tell me you’re awake all night?”
“Nope, I slept. I just woke up the same time with you. I heard the alarm of your clock, you know,”
“Uhmm… so it’s already morning and I need to go to school, this means I have to end this call now,”
“Yeah, so sad. Aren’t you sad?”
“Why would I be sad?”
“Because we can no longer talk to each other,”
“Jin, you’re being unreasonable,”
“What’s unreasonable about that? You know, I’ll gonna miss you,”
Kame creased his forehead. “Jin being acting weird lately,”
“Kame, are you still there?”
“Y-yeah, uhmm… listen, Jin. I will have a class in one hour, so I need to end this call now to prepare myself to class, ok? Bye,”
“Ok, bye. But don’t turn off you phone, I might call you, ok?”
“Uhmm… o-k?” Kame hesitated.
“Good. Call you later, bye,” Jin bid goodbye and ended the call.
“Seriously, there’s something wrong with Jin,” Kame sighed.

All afternoon, Kame was busy figuring out why Jin was become sweet to him. He even asked for his friends help.
“He’s different. It’s not like him to do that. He’s my best friend but telling me that he’ll miss me… it’s weird, really weird,” Kame said.
“Maybe he will really miss you. Kazu, your best friend was away for six years. Of course, he’ll miss you,” Maru said.
“Maru, he’s already here, here in Japan. He doesn’t have to miss me. He doesn’t have to keep his call until morning. He doesn’t have to do anything,” Kame explained.
“Kazu, why do I feel that you don’t like what Jin is doing for you?” Koki asked.
“I don’t like it. It’s just that, I can’t imagine him treating me like this. I’m not comfortable with it,”
“Maybe, Jin likes you,” Junno said.
“Idiot, of course Jin likes Kame. They are best friend, remember? How on earth will you have a best friend if you don’t like him, genius?” Koki said.
“I’m not talking about their friendship. I’m talking about Jin falling in love with Kame,” Junno explained. “And does your last statement means that you like me also. ‘Coz you said that best friend likes each other”.
“What? Who says I like you? I barely know you,” Koki joked. Instead of seeing Junno’s annoyed face, he saw his smiling face that made him more annoyed. “You are such a pain in my eye”.
“Ok, guys stop. You two are always bickering,” Maru complained.
“I’m not the one who started it, he did,” Koki pointed Junno.
“Why me? You’re always contradicting everything I say,” Junno defend himself.
“Why won’t I do that? Everything you say is nonsense, for your information,” Koki fight back.
“Nu-uh,”
“Uh-huh,”
“Nu-uh,”
“Uh-huh,”
“Nu-uh”
“Oh, will the two of you just shut up. Your ‘nu-uh’ and ‘uh-huh’ makes you sound like caveman. So, stop it. Let’s just focus to Kazu’s issue here and just settle your later,” Maru said irritably.
“Maybe, Junno’s right. Maybe Jin’s already falling in love with you,” Ueda said to Kame as he taps the younger man’s shoulder.
“You know, that can’t be. It really can’t be. Jin can’t fall for me, ‘coz he have Naomi and… and,”
“You’re in love,” Ueda continued. “Kazu, maybe this is your chance”.
“A chance for what?” Kame asked.
“A chance to show him that you still love him. A chance to finally tell him that all of this years your patiently waiting for his return. Kazu, Jin is already here, already showing you some affection. Don’t let it all go, don’t hesitate, and don’t even try to stop him,” Ueda explained.
“What do you want me to do then?” Kame asked again.
“Just be yourself, that’s all,” Junno answered with a smile in his face.

Unknown to Kame’s concern, Jin’s calling his phone for several times now. Kame can’t hear it since it is in silent mood.
“Stupid Kame! Not that I really mean it, but he knows that I would call him and he‘s not answering my call,” Jin said angrily.
~*~
“Hello?” Kame asked.
“Hello, Kame. Where are you?” Jin asked.
“I’m still here in school,” Kame answered.
“Why didn’t you answer my calls?”
“Jin, it’s not allowed to have phones during class hours and you know that,”
“But you should change it back when you’re free,”
“Ops, I forgot about it,”
“Next time, don’t forget to return it into ringing mode when it’s your free time. You know how many calls I just did?”
“I’m sorry,”
“It’s ok. So, what time are you going home?”
“I don’t know, I still have a lot of work to do,”
“Project?”
“Yeah,”
“Don’t be late to go home. You know how dangerous it is when it’s already dark,”
“Yes, don’t worry I will,”
“Ok, I’ll call you again later. Bye,”
“Bye,” Kame ended the call. And the, he sighed. “I don’t know how I can tolerate this sudden change of attitude. I don’t want to believe that Jin’s falling in love with me but… on what he acted awhile ago, he talks like he’s my boyfriend or something,” “I wish I was wrong”.
