Chapter Eight: I Wish I Was Wrong

“It is better to have loved and lost,
Than never to have loved at all.”

~*~

It’s been two months now, since Jin arrived in Japan. And many things or strange things had happened. Most of it has something to do with his feelings.

~*~

“Jin, isn’t it nice to be here in Okinawa?” Naomi said as they walked hand in hand at the side of the beach.

Jin kept silent. He wasn’t listening to Naomi at all. Ever since they arrived in Okinawa, he was in deep thought.

“Jin, are you alright?” Naomi asked. When Jin didn’t reply. She stopped on walking and let go of Jin’s hand.

Jin quickly returned to his senses when he realized what Naomi had done. He looked at her and asked, “Is there something wrong?”

Naomi felt neglected. She should have known that, Jin wasn’t listening to her. “I should be the one to ask you that. I was talking to you for who-knows-how-long now and all you just did was thinking about something else. Jin, if you don’t want to listen to me or you want me to shut up, you could have just said it to me. But don’t act that way, it’s making me stupid,” she said with a slight annoyance in the tone of her voice.

Jin couldn’t say anything except, “Sorry”.

Naomi sighed. She looked at Jin in the eye and placed her hand on his cheek. “Be honest with me, ok?”

Jin nodded slowly. He can see in Naomi’s eyes that there’s doubt and confusion.

“Jin, do you want to stay here in Japan?”

Jin creased his forehead. “What kind of question is that?”

“Just answer me, do you want to stay here?”

“Yes, of course,”

“Why?”

Jin suddenly felt nervous. Something tells him that  this  conversation isn’t such a good idea. “I-I-” he can’t say a word.

“Just tell me the reason, why,”

~*~

Naomi was at the balcony in their house in L.A, resting as she talked to Jin over her mobile phone.

“So, how was it?” Naomi asked.

“How was what?” Jin asked back.

“Your relationship with Kame, duh?” Naomi rolled her eyes.

“Good… I think” Jin said with doubt.

“What do you mean by that?”

“I don’t know,” Jin sighed. “Naomi, I don’t think everything will work out with us”.

“Jin, why are you saying that?” Naomi moved her mobile to her other ear. “Of course everything will work out, so don’t think too much”.

Jin sighed again. “I hope”.

~*~

“I just want to..,” Jin sat down at beach sand. “I’ve been away for too long. And I think it’s about time for me to stay here for awhile”.

Naomi nodded as she means that she understands Jin. Then, she sat beside Jin. “Jin, I have another question”. She was hesitating to ask Jin her next question but she knows that she must. “How…,” she bit her lips. “How close are you to Kame?”

Jin looked at Naomi for awhile. He didn’t expect Naomi to ask something about him and Kame. He didn’t even thought about his closeness to Kame, ever since. For him, as long as he’s with his best friend, there’s nothing to ask about or to question about.

Naomi waited for Jin’s answer. She knows that there’s something wrong with her boyfriend that even Jin hadn’t thought about it or even noticed it. And asking him is the only way for her to know what it is.

Jin suddenly spoke with remorse in his eyes and even in the sound of his voice. “To be honest, I haven’t thought about how close I am to Kame or even asked myself about it. Before I left Japan, we were very close that we even asked our mothers to make us legally brothers,” Jin laughed bitterly. He looked at the sunset as he reflected to his past. “As much as possible, we do everything together. My mom said that ever since Kame was born, I always asked her to go with me to Kame’s house so that I could play with him,” He smiled bitterly. “We really had such nice memories together,” Jin deeply sighed. He looked down and started to write ‘promise’ on the sand. “But now, I don’t know if he even wants me to be here,” He looked at Naomi, who is intently looking at him. “Because I broke my promise,” he, then, looked at sunset again.

~*~

“Hey! Don’t hope, do it,” Naomi said. “If I could just go there, I would probably drag you to Kame’s house and force you to talk to him.”

“Naomi, I always talk to him and…,” Jin kept quiet for a minute. “Every time I do that, I could feel that he’s distancing his self to me, it’s like he doesn’t want me to be around.”

Naomi felt sad for Jin. She wants to comfort the latter by tapping his shoulder or by any means, but since she’s still in L.A she can’t. “Maybe Kame was just adjusting. You’ve been away for six years and I don’t think one conversation will make him feel ok. You have to wait and take a risk. You also have to understand Kame’s situation.”

“But what about me? How long will I wait?”

“Jin, like what I’ve said, you’ve been away for too long. And Kame’s just adjusting, with you being around and with your new found feelings for him. You can’t say you love him or show him your love in one blow, you might make him feel scared or confused. Besides, you’ve just been there in Japan for a month, so don’t expect anything good yet,” Naomi explained. “If you really love him, you wouldn’t asked about how long you will have to wait or how about your feelings to him. Jin, don’t rushed everything”.

~*~

Naomi saw many sides of Jin that she never seen before. And it made her doubt herself from being a girlfriend to Jin. Before she thought that she already knew everything about Jin, but after seeing her boyfriend’s sad face and hearing his guilty confession, does she really know the real Jin? She realized that she shouldn’t be the one asking Jin on how close he is to Kame. She should be the one asking herself on how close she is to Jin. Maybe six months is still short but it should be enough for her to know something about Jin’s past, some of his problems and his feelings. After all, she has the right to know.

“Jin, I’m going back to L.A this Monday,” Naomi said out of the blue.

Jin was surprised. “What? Why?”

“It’s my sister’s wedding next Wednesday,” Naomi briefly said.

“Oh, I see. That’s great isn’t it? Since she and her fiancé were been together for five years now,” Jin said happily.

“Yeah,” Naomi bitterly smiled. “Jin, do you want to come?”

Jin looked at Naomi for awhile. In his mind, he was struggling if he will go or he will stay. It will be rude if he didn’t come but if he will leave, what about Kame?

Naomi had quickly read Jin’s mind. “If you don’t want to leave Kame, it’s alright with me”.

Jin looked at her seriously. “What do you mean?”

“You broke your promise to Kame, so I think it’s time for you to be sorry and pay it off”.

“But, what about you?” Jin asked in concerned tone.

“Don’t worry, I’ll be fine.” Naomi gave a soft smile. She looked away from Jin and said, “It’s better to stay with your love than leave and regret”.

Jin doesn’t understand the last sentence that Naomi had just said. “Naomi, you’re acting weird”.

Naomi shook her head. “No, I’m not being weird. I’m just telling the truth”. She looked at Jin as she placed a forced smile on her lips

“What truth?” Jin creased his forehead.

Naomi placed her hand to Jin’s shoulder. “That you’ve fallen for Kame”.

~*~

Jin sighed. “I know. But do you think I could wait for him?”

“Only you can answer that question. Waiting doesn’t only test patience but it also test your love for him,”

Jin sighed again. “Why do I have to do this? It’s so difficult,” he complained.

“You have choices,” Naomi smiled.

“Huh?” Jin creased his forehead.

“If you can no longer wait for him, just come back here in L.A-,”

“No way. And I will leave Kame again? Nu-uh,” Jin interrupted.

“Or you stay there in Japan and do everything to make him fall for you. It’s just a matter of choice,” Naomi explained. Though she had enough of Jin’s complaints, she have to bear with it because she knows that she’s the only one Jin could talk to about this matter. And aside from that, they may have already ended up their relationship but they kept their friendship.

~*~

“Fa-fallen for Kame?” Jin asked. He felt curious at the same time confused.

Naomi stared at Jin’s brown eyes. “You may not realize it, Jin. But, yeah, you’ve fallen for him”.

Jin faced Naomi. “How? How could that be? He’s only my friend, Naomi. A friend is only a friend”.

“But a friend can also turned into a lover,” Naomi said. “Everything starts with friendship, Jin. That’s where we had started too”.

“But…,”

“Jin, what you had told me awhile ago was too much for a friend or a best friend,” Naomi stretched her arms in the air. Then, she looked at Jin. “You wouldn’t even do that for me even if I’m your friend. What more that I’m your girlfriend?” Naomi stood up and started to walk.

~*~

“I’ve decided. I will do everything to make Kame mine. I won’t come back there in L.A without him,” Jin said with full of determination.

“That’s the spirit! Now, what’s gonna be your plan?”

“Don’t know. I’ve never thought about it,”

Naomi rolled her eyes. “If I could just go there right now, I would hit your head hard. And it might shaken your head and make your brain work. We were talking for an hour now and you haven’t made a plan? How can you make sure that Kame will fall for you if you take everything for granted?” Naomi scolded.

“Hey! I don’t take things for granted. I just haven’t thought about a plan yet. I’ll make up something tomorrow.”

“Ok, suit yourself,”

“Naomi, let’s just continue this tomorrow,” Jin yawned. “I’m getting sleepy”.

“Ok, just don’t forget to think of a plan. I’ll call you later, Bye,”

“Bye,” Jin ended the call and quickly dozed off.

~*~

Jin quickly stood up and catch up with Naomi. “Wait, what do you mean by that?” He held Naomi’s arm so that she could faced him.

“Jin, you love me before and I’m happy for that. But now, it’s different,” Naomi tried to act calm.

“I don’t understand? Wha-why are you saying this?”

“Let’s face it Jin, you’re in love with Kame. And I don’t think I can still stay as your girlfriend if we are in this kind of situation. You’re a good boyfriend but I don’t want to be in this kind of relationship. I don’t need a half-hearted love,” Naomi said as she forced herself not to cry.

“Are you breaking up with me?” Jin confronted.

“Yes, Jin. I’m breaking up with you,” Naomi said as tears starts to form from her eyes. “I’m setting you free”.

“Naomi,”

“I can’t stay with you anymore. I don’t want to be the hindrance of your happiness. If loving Kame will make you happy then, I won’t object,” Tears starts to roll down to Naomi’s cheeks. “Thanks for the memories we had together. And also, thank you for loving me even for a short period of time,” Naomi placed her hands to Jin’s cheeks. She slowly moved her face close to Jin. “I love you, Jin” She closed her eyes making another set of tears roll down from her cheeks. She gave a soft kiss on Jin’s lips. “Goodbye Jin”.

Jin wipe off Naomi’s tears on her cheeks with the use of his thumbs. “Thank you Naomi for everything. I hope you will easily find your happiness”.

Naomi shook her head and smiled. “Happiness will never be easily found nor achieve”. She hugged Jin tightly for the last time.

“I wish we could still be friends,” Jin said as he hugged Naomi back.

“We could. I would love that,” Naomi answered.

After a few minutes, they both let go and decided to went back to Tokyo instead of staying for a night in Okinawa. It was been a stressful day for both of them, not physically but emotionally. But even though it is stressful, it is also good that they both found out something that gave benefit to their relationship as friends. It’s better to be like this than fooling their selves. Though it’s still hurts especially to Naomi, they have to accept the fact that they can no longer be together. And the love they have for each other now were not more than the love between friends.
