Like many young girls in the 90’s, I was hooked on the storm called Girl Power and the elements that Posh Spice, Baby Spice, Ginger Spice, Sporty Spice, and Scary Spice brought along with it. And just yesterday I had the privilege to see these girls in concert.
Me and Suzie got to downtown at around 4:30 and ate at California Pizza Kitchen. While we were there, we noticed that 75% of the tables were of women our age and up. Then one waiter who was saying goodbye to one table shouted “Have fun at the Spice Girls concert!” and it hit us...we were sharing a restaurant with fellow fans. Not only did it finally hit us that yes, we were about to see the Spice Girls in a few hours, we also realized we needed to rush out and beat the rest to the merchandise! Lol Luckily for us, we finished our dinner when a horde of other people started coming in so we started driving to Staples Center.
When we got there, there were already huge lines for the entrance and a semi long line for the merchandise. Getting in the line for the merchandise was exciting and finally being at the front of the line was even more exciting. I think I even told the person selling the merchandise that (Lol). I bought the tour book and promised myself that I would buy the tour shirt when I got in since they sold out on the smaller sizes outside. TMZ was there filming and also Chelsea from “Chelsea Lately” (E! Network) was interviewing fans. I saw fans dressed up as a Spice Girl (it reminded me that some things never will change)...I saw mothers with their little kids..I even saw dads! Some fans started singing “Come on, come on, come on, come on!” ala Spice World movie...a car passing by was blasting out Wannabe in their car stereo..excitement was already in the air. When we got in, there was a mob at the place where they were selling the merchandise so me and Suzie pushed ourselves through in determination. Eventually I was able to get into the front of the line (with Suzie clinging in back of me) but then more people started shoving forward which pushed me and the table in front of me forward and I was practically sprawled upper body first onto the table! I looked at the girl selling the merchandise and said “Woah...I’ve never been in this position before” (LMAO) Eventually I bought my shirt and Suzie’s “Posh” shirt and we ran to the restroom to change in them. We then took pictures outside of the restroom and walked to where they were selling glow sticks, posters, etc. I bought us 2 glow sticks and we went to our seats. The wait for the concert to start was torture but we had the music of Timbaland, Justin, and Britney to keep us going.
The show started with a video of 5 little girls and each was suppose to embody one of the Spice Girls. They danced around in a bedroom with bright, colorful lights and butterflies surrounding them. It made me remember us, young fans who were excited about the Spice Girls 10 years ago. It actually made me cry.
From beginning to end, it took me on a journey that left me breathless and wanting more. I didn’t mind standing up for 2 hours and not sitting down and neither did the rest of the people. It was pure pandemonium..the screams were deafening! Everyone was singing the lyrics, dancing the moves, jumping up and down. I loved the story behind the concert and the transitions to each song. The atmosphere was so positive and amazing. I loved remembering my childhood moments when I heard different Spice Girl songs. I even loved the solo performances! Victoria’s runway walk and the “paparazzi” made me laugh…Mel B’s solo was awesome and the guy that she brought up and tied to the post was so lucky...Mel C’s “I Turn To You” made me feel like I was in a club and it felt so liberating...Emma’s was great and so Emma (lol)...Geri’s “It’s Raining Men” was also awesome and me, Suzie, and the rest of the fans started jumping up and down when the male dancers tore their shirts off.
During “Who Do You Think You Are”, the male dancers flew the British flag off to reveal Geri in the modernized version of the iconic Union Jack dress and the crowd went wild! The ending of “Viva Forever” got me emotional when all of a sudden Geri disappeared from the stage (to symbolize the time when she had left the group) and the end of “Let Love Lead The Way” when she reappears with them again arm and arm. When they were singing “Goodbye”, butterflies flew around them..it was so beautiful. “Mama” was very touching and I was this close to calling my mom on my cell but I was filming on my phone lol...Geri’s “Don’t f*cking swear!” to Mel B was classic during “Wannabe”!

At the end of the concert the screens at the back of my idols said MISSION ACCOMPLISHED. To me these words have more than one meaning. I believe now that any dream that I have can come true if I never lose hope. How is it that I was able to get tickets even though I knew there was a possibility they wouldn’t be given to me?
Some people may call it luck but I call it another blessing from God. I believe in the power of dreams now.
You could say the Spice Girls were a phenomenal group in this world. They ARE phenomenal. But not for us fans. They are something bigger...the biggest inspiration for us..they made us who we are and who we want to be. I will never stop appreciating their impact on me in many ways.
With that said, my childhood dream was accomplished. Yesterday, on December 7, 2007, the last chapter of my childhood was finished. If I had to sum up my entire childhood in two words, those two words would be Spice Girls. This is what I remember the best times in life to be. Seeing the Spice Girls in concert was the final step to close my childhood in the way it should: with the greatest memories to last me until the next lifetime. And as the screens at the back of my idols said, MISSION ACCOMPLISHED.
That night was the best night of my life.
