My rambles and thoughts from tonight's episode!
1x15 - The Power of Madonna
My first thought is I loved how Madonna was centric to this entire episode. From the very beginning, you get Madonna. Now, I'm not a huge Madonna fan, but I can still appreciate what she offers. I loved that they had her (original) tracks fed through the background of most of the scenes. And I particularly enjoyed, while Rachel and Finn were singing, "Open Your Heart/Borderline", when the background actors were all dressed in Madonna's outfits from assorted music videos/performances.
Sue and her ragging on Will's hair? I'm kind of over it. Her zingers are hilarious and all, but zing on something else.
I loved the build up to "Like a Virgin". You knew it was coming and it was fantastic when it happened, especially the Will/Emma action, however imaginary. One day, my fellow Will & Emma shippers; one day they will be together.
Oh Finn. Why'd you have to sleep with Santana? I knew, from spoilers, that one of the three couples actually slept together. It's just heartbreaking to see him go through with it, especially where he says he's so invested in going after Rachel. The line afterward, "I don't feel anything... because it didn't mean anything," was fantastic. Thumbs up!
The scene between Emma and Sue is just awful. Sue is so mean and Jayma plays Emma so, so well here. I actually said out loud, "She's so mean!"
The significance of "Borderline/Open Your Heart" is particularly moving. Now that the roles are reversed, I do want Finn/Rachel together. This being said, I'm not crazy about Jesse. I said previously that I'm unsure of his intentions. I do think they are nothing but bad. Speculation may be that he will eventually fall for her, but I don't see that happening.
In the same frame of mind, I'm alongside a majority of the other glee kids when it comes to Jesse joining the group. I do not care for him and I do not want him in New Directions. However ~legit~ his joining may be, it's only bad news.
"Like a Prayer" is my favorite Madonna song. Hands down. My favorite performance was "Express Yourself", but "Like a Prayer" was a close second. I felt like the choir was a little too large in comparison to the glee club. It felt a little overwhelming.
Overall, I enjoyed this episode more than last week's, for sure. All of the music was fantastic. The writing was pretty spot on, aside from too many jabs at Will's hair. I'm much happier with this episode than with last week's.
Favorite line? "That's not what you were offering. Why would you offer that? That wasn't what I was thinking. Wishful thinking is all that was."
Favorite performance? "Express Yourself" I loved the girl power of this number and how it didn't focus on one single character, but embraced the group as a whole.
peace.
