Well, we survived.
The first part of the storm came through Monday night canceling work and school on Tuesday. We still had power at this point(although I did not have cell phone service so it was fun to try to notify my kids), so I used the day to practice and catch up on the Australian Open.
Tuesday night the second part of the storm came through and we lost power sometime in the middle of the night. So Wednesday I had cell phone service but no power. Hardly a fair trade. The power blinked a couple of times that morning so we thought that we would be getting it back pretty soon. We kept busy throughout the day without power, walking to a nearby restaurant for lunch, walking to a farther away but still nearby store to buy batteries, walking back home to cut branches that were hanging on our cable line, dig out my car*, and evacuate our food from the refrigerator to Colin's trunk. We put pretty much all the covers we have on our bed, and ended up spending the night in a house with no heat.
The temperature in the house had been dropping steadily throughout the day, and by Thursday morning, it was fricking freezing in the lower 40's/upper 30's IN OUR HOUSE! Even with the tiny gas heater our landlord had brought us, we couldn't imagine staying in the house with the temperature continuing to drop.
So, we headed over to a friend's mother's house, spent the day there, and the night on her hardwood floors. Our friend's husband bought a generator on Friday, so we headed down to their house on Friday night. Saturday morning our power was back on, thank goodness. I was coming up with back-up plans to get some practicing done, since I had lost 3 days of practicing.
Now, I have to deal with all the rescheduling.
*Fun side story: In Colin's zeal to get my car unburied from snow and de-iced, he had a system of cracking the ice on the windows to make it easier to remove. He tried this on my driver's side mirror with the result of creating a spider-web crack and the accidental removal of a piece of my mirror. I did not realize how bad this would be until driving down to our friends' house on Friday night - I tried to get on the interstate and realized that I was seeing 20 lights where I should be seeing 2. Not so fun. No worries: I was able to get a replacement kit on Saturday, and it is now fixed.
Back to work!
