It's was long busy winter and its been a while since I have posted anything, I figure its time for another rec post!
I have read tons this last few months, mostly in Stargate fandom though, but lots in Spn too. Unfortunately there is not a lot of SPN stories catching my eye lately and some of the new authors/stories that I have been following seem to have adandoned them.
I'm looking forward to Bigbang. I hope we get a nicer balance of fic this year, now the boys are back to good (thank you, Matchbox Twenty). I want some good Sam and Dean casefic!
Saying that you'll be surprised at my first rec. LOL
portraitofafool The Deep Indigo Night
http://portraitofafool.livejournal.com/22046.html#cutid1 SPN/ Criminal minds cross. Although I think a person reading this would still be ok if they'd never seen CM before.
This is one I almost skipped. I don't read Evil, Dark-Sam, and even Souless-Sam really has just been another excuse for Evil-Sam. Which has been narrowing down my reading choices the last few years. LOL
This was one of the very few times I've read Souless-Sam that actually felt like they tried to understand what would have made a Sam without a soul work. Not just have him be a psycho killer because its a great crutch and easy.
Very well done characterisations on the Criminal minds team too. We get a bit of both sides of the fandoms, although a little heavier on the Criminal Minds side which it how this should have been.
Nicely done tying things together in a way that they could point to Sam. I love the profiling part of Criminal minds and this didn't feel like it was too easily pieced together with stuff we all know but they don't, being easily figured out. Great little story and a very nice ending that makes my SamGirl soul happy.
debbiel66 Resurrected !John series
http://debbiel66.livejournal.com/tag/resurrected%21john I love stories that bring John back and let him get to see the men his boys have become. How the choices he made and the lifestyle they lived affected them for the good and the bad.
Debbie, imo, always has a great grasp of the boys and John.
Start with Clean Slate. Killing Time, is my favourite part so far. I love the interaction between John and Sam in this one. Exactly how I figure it would go over between these two. LOL
I'm grateful that Debbie didn't wait for Big Bang to post this story because we get to read it now.
Run and Hide- Ainokitsune
http://www.fanfiction.net/s/6898391/1/ This a was dark and haunting take on what imo, could have just as easily been the outcome of the Winchester's childhood in a what if way.
This could be AU, they kind of left it open to interpretation. I liked this a lot.
The author has an interesting style that lends well to the whole mindset of this piece. I've read a few of her/his other stories too and they are all quite good.
A Handful of Violets By Livengoo
http://www.fanfiction.net/s/6806054/1/ If you read only one story today read this.
This was an absolutely gorgeous John-centric case fic. Haunting writing that set a tone and kept it throughout. I thought about this story, about the character May, and John, for days after I read it.
This isn't a romance. It's a lovely look at John doing his job, it's lonely and even sad, because he rarely sees the best of people in this work. I felt like May would have been one of those rare cases that stuck with John, someone whose story haunted him for years.
I actually found A handful of Vilolets, because the SG1 story Tarantella, had been rec'd, it was huge so I thought before I plowed through eighty-thousand words I'd try out something smaller. I'm so glad I did.
If you are in to SG1, her story Tarantalla was pretty amazing. I want one like this for spn. This was a non-stop thrill-ride. Tension for twenty-six chapters, great world building, nice tight writing, great scene setting, and a grittier look at the team. I always prefer the grittier version of my fandom characters. I think because they have more realistic choices, thoughts, action. Less tv gloss. And this had an o/c that I was desperately trying to think in my head, how he could make it home too.
An all around fantastic read, I seriously wanted to start over when I finished.
Tarantella - livengoo SG1 fic
on lj
http://gooligan.livejournal.com/ on ffnet
http://www.fanfiction.net/s/6394675/1/Tarantella Phoenix on cloud nine - An Important Skill
http://www.fanfiction.net/s/6509440/1/ This is just a short piece, another crossover NCIS this time which you need to know nothing about to read this but for those who do, excellent job with Gibbs.
I really loved this because it was just a sweet preseries story. John takes the boys bow hunting and Sam stumbles across a body. The boys are young, Sam's eight, so we get some hero-worship for his dad and the excitement of getting to do stuff like bow hunting but with a bit of the start of the grumblings of the why does he have to do stuff like this. LOL I liked how she bridged both Sam's, the child that would have loved this because he was and eight year old boy with the glimpse of the preteen who doesn't like anything, especially anything he has to do.
Aerie- Ameonna
http://www.fanfiction.net/s/6957397/1/Aerie http://ameonna1-writes.livejournal.com/ This, I don't even know.. LOL.. I had planned on reading one of her other stories but realised it was the third in a series so went back to the beginning. I still haven't even read the one I intended to read in the first place. I think the other three may end up D/C S/G but this stands alone just fine as gen, for anyone inot into Angel pairings.
What can I say, I loved this. I mean it has a fledgling angel baby (so not something I would normally read) and no Sam (again, ditto, he is on the phone though) but it was just an engaging sweet story.
It does have a glimpse at an interesting au world, a great Dean who is still very Dean like, the story sucks you in and leaves you with a smile.... I wanted more and have been saving the next three stories til I have a quiet, non-rushed hour to read them all in one go. It's not like it's huge either, the four together are around twenty-thousand words so really I could read them easily in less than an hour but I hate to rush and I haven't had a chance to review them. Also her lj has a pdf you can dl which I discovered later.
Anyway for something completely different, there you go...
Happy reading!
