Spn recs (with lots of crossovers)

Jan 27, 2011 22:48

I get out of a reading mood every now and again and the last few months I have been reading but not like I normally do.

I am just about done with the really crappy novel I have been trying to finish for six months. Ugh I don’t even know why I am still reading it but I payed for it so feel obligated to finish it. LOL.
I figured out the whole “mystery“ early in , I don’t have any love for the main characters and even rolled my eyes a few times when it was supposed to be the main characters reactions to how much the horribleness of what these people were doing hit them. I’ve read better fan fiction.
In case you’re wondering I’m talking about Devil’s Keep by Phillip Finch. Which I admit, I bought on the basis of the cover art more than anything. So I geuss this is more a rec of don’t buy this. LOL

On to the SPN fiction, in which I apparently have been reading crossovers. Lots and lots of them.

Oblivion- MinDae

Sam after Dean’s death. Nice little look into Sam’s slide into revenge minded Sam, Ruby and demon blood.

I checked my inbox obsessively for updates for these next few. LOL

Floria- Stranger than fiction
http://www.fanfiction.net/s/6464159/1/

I have always been impressed with Floria’s writing. She used to be more of a thinky writer. Or at least that’s what I call writers that have more thought than talking. LOL She stuck in my head for weeks after I finished Tipping the Scales.

I enjoy with Floria, her what you are seeing isn’t always what you get, approach. She is damned good at that. Read “Intervention” if you want to see her at her best. Or “Prisoner of Our Own Device“. Stranger than fiction, was a little different, being that its mostly an opov. But with the same work it out as you go style.

She has been doing a lot of co-writing lately and I can see how it has influenced her style a bit. The to-the-point approach Gidgetgal takes has helped Floria to tell a less rambly and a more cleaned up story. Also sendintheclowns has been betaing for her as well and maybe that‘s more to do with it than GG.
As long as she stays away from gg’s penchant to retell the same scene from the other characters pov. (Something that drives me absolutely batty…LOL but is really my own pet peeve and nothing against her writing cos she is a good author.)

I would have liked to have heard Sam’s story because so much of this was everyone waiting for him to be able to tell it. But I also can see where it wasn’t necessary and even maybe would have taken away from what she was trying to tell. But all in all, nicely done.

Puddle Jumping- Calamity Jim

http://www.fanfiction.net/s/6402015/1/Puddle_Jumping

This is a crossover with Stargate and Stargate Atlantis. I can’t tell you how long I have been waiting for someone to write a story like this. This author is pretty ingenious in the way she/he set this up so they are now open to pretty much cross spn with whichever space show they want and in my opinion any show. The possibilities are just endless. And to make it even better the author who came up with this very creative plan can actually write, and loves Sam. Not to sound catty but its pretty hard to find a crossover with Sam involved where he isn’t evil or whiny, that is worth reading. And Dean is an awesome kick-ass kind of a combination of season one and later Dean. Also they really know their Stargate characters.
Even better was I finally got my Jack and Sam time. I really can’t say enough about this one. If you only have passing knowledge of Stargate it’s well worth your time. Heck I would read it either way.

Filtered- ASadisticWhim
http://www.fanfiction.net/s/5984613/1/Filtered

If you read Redemption you’ll remember a part towards the end where Dean reads a letter from Sam and that he hates letters from Sam. If you didn’t, that’s ok too, you don’t need to know anything about Redemption to read these but it is a nice little tie-in.

Each chapter is a stand alone story so don‘t let that confuse you.
As usual I love her scene setting and the way she says more by letting your mind draw some of its own conclusions.
I wish she wrote more often but it also makes when she does write, that much more special.

Another crossover but with Criminal minds this time, Actually I discovered Criminal minds from reading kikimax’s defect and it was such a great story and I really loved all the characters enough to check out the show. Now its up there won my list of favourite shows.

Liliaeth- The white lamb

http://www.fanfiction.net/s/6505659/1/The_White_Lamb

I really loved how she took off from the pilot of spn and went completely au but tied it back into some of the events from season six.

Baylorsr- Redux
http://baylorsr.livejournal.com/385292.html#cutid1

Another cross with Criminal minds. Ok and even if you don’t like or even know criminal minds this one is worth the read.

I have been waiting for someone to write an au type thing along these lines for awhile and even better that its criminal minds and excellent job with Hotchner.

Sort of spoilers-
The only thing is, I want this but not this ending. the ending makes me mad and super impressed all at the same time and.. Dammit… I want this, but not this and I am not going to say any more because even if you don’t know Criminal minds you should read this just for the fabulous way she leads you through this story. I’ve read this at least five times already.

Mouseme - Fusion verse  I may have missed some
http://www.fanfiction.net/s/6266957/1/Fusion
http://www.fanfiction.net/s/6341625/1/In_from_the_Rain
http://www.fanfiction.net/s/6367201/1/Mock_the_Midnight_Bell
http://www.fanfiction.net/s/6544192/1/And_Deaths_Dark_Shadows_Put_To_Flight

Mousme always does a fabulous job with the boys and their relationship and I know I rec'd her Roses in winter story.
I read the first story in this verse and ripped through all the rest of them that night and still pouted when I ran out of stories.

I must have a thing for not-playing-with-a-full-deck Sam and protective-loving-big brother Dean. LOL
I would consider asking to podfic this verse if things seemed like I would be able to finish it, for a while here.
I think that why I like this is that Sam isn't always out to lunch. Most the time he functions pretty well and that makes it hurt so much more when our sweet Sam slips away and we know what is lost between the boys and how it pains Dean, than if he was gone all the time. And Poor Dean with his fused knee.
She couldn’t have made a better combo of tender caring hurt Dean and somewhat nuts Sam to push my buttons. Lovely verse.

I had another excellent cross with criminal minds/spn and bugger all, I can't find it now.
