Last week I was very blessed to spend some time at home with my family. It's always a joy to be home. We chatted, sipped tea, worshipped together, and went on a bus trip to see Sight and Sound's production of Jonah. It was wonderful. I've been curious to get a better grasp on how the Old Testament saints quote the Old Testament. I found one reference book that's provided a helpful starting point. The New Treasury of Scripture Knowledge by Jerome H. Smith notes places where the prophets quote/reference the Torah. I skimmed through the references for Jonah, Habakkuk, Nahum, ( Read more... )

The Bible is a long book. Because of that, I find that it can be hard to grasp its message and unity. I've started keeping an eye out for passages where people in the Old Testament quote earlier Scripture. I want to limit myself to the Old Testament for now because I feel that by understanding God's word before He sent Christ, I'll be better ( Read more... )

Maybe this is just me over-reading the text, but is it possible that the weeds which were wrapped around Jonah's head (Jonah 2:5) pointed to the thorns which were wrapped around our Savior's head (John 19:5)? Perhaps not, but since Jonah was the sign given to Israel of Jesus' resurrection from the dead, I wanted to make note of the idea.

Yesterday I reached the end of Nahum chapter 2. This book is written in a very different way compared to Jonah and Habakkuk. Jonah is a narrative which recounts the ministry of a prophet whom God sent to a mighty city in a foreign (hostile) nation. In the second chapter of Jonah, the prophet prays from the fish's belly. And it's amazing how confident his prayer is. I pray that over time, my prayers will be less focused on my weakness and more focused on God's faithfulness. On Monday, I cooked dinner for a full house. We had three of the five roommates there along with two guests. I had met one of the guests the day before at church.
