I'm not going to lie to you, I really haven't been on board with a few of the plotlines recently. But this episode starting delivering great character and relationship moments by the bucketload which was fantastic and made me feel a little like Christmas. And in the end, if the characters are awesome? I can overlook (most of) the plot flaws.
First things first: PILOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOTS YES YES YES HOMG YES
I was getting a bit worried when Kara visited Hyb!Sam and she started giving the 'you're my Sam' speech, right up until she pulled the gun (which I didn't see coming at all!). Then I breathed a little sigh of relief - even if he wakes up, he's going to be messed up, and to be honest she should probably put him out of his misery (if and when he gives some answers from the great beyond). I hope that real!Sam is chilling in the Opera House, though, because although he's been keeping my ship apart for the last however long he's still pretty cool and I don't want him to be dead dead forever.
Other character things I liked: KARA/GAIUS frak yes. You know I totally shipped that in s1 (it's so wrong, but they are so similar that it's almost right). Anyway great to see them getting some interaction. Kara's plotline has got a bit boring to me lately - seems like they've spent a whole season doing the 'what am I?' stuff and maybe won't actually tell us, which is lame. And I'm not sure what was achieved by having Gaius tell everyone about her. But I was excited to see them interact, even if Kara was on the toilet most of the time.
BILL/LAURA: Laura's been redundant plotwise for quite some time. But nice to see them chilling together, remembering old times.
GAIUS/CAPRICA: Seriously, the Caprica/Tigh plot was so bizarre and I never bought it at all. So I was very excited to see these two get some interaction and a hint that she's the one G always loved. Maybe she will forgive him if she sees he has changed (in some ways)?
Speaking of Six, I wanted Head!Six to speak instead of just sitting around. But this is another thing I have not appreciated in s4.
BILL/TIGH: Yeah, we get the point that they are the ultimate pairing of the show. But it's still cute.
BOOMER/HERA: I loved getting some idea of Hera as a character. She's been so background for ages that it was amazing to see her projecting, talking, really coming into her abilities. I hope Boomer feels guilty, especially given that Hera seems to like her now.
OTHER POINTS: Editing: A+. Great stuff esp. with the Opera House and Hyb!Sam. Music: nice to hear all our fave themes (maybe some of the last times - I'm hoping the score for the finale will be epically amazing). Bookending: nice call backs to the funerals in the Mini/s1, but showing how things have changed since then - the military, the cylons and the civilian fleet/cult crazies now working together but also separate. With the panning shots of the crew in dress uniform this was esp. obvious.
I really think I'm going to need some emotional support come the finale, though. Because I teared up a little bit at points during this, even though it wasn't even sad.
