"Why are we here?” Kyp whispered.
The Jedi were acting as ambassadors to something the locals called a New Years Eve Party, and Kyp wasn’t impressed. The group of immaculately dressed humans gathered on the rooftop seemed content drinking large quantities of a very bubbly wine and chatting mindlessly.
Phaelon, his Kiffar partner, glowered, although her Force impression said she was bored. “Smile. Be glad they’re not paying attention to you.”
Kyp yawned, and the conversation droned on. As a party, it wasn’t much. It had to have been midnight before the crowd got very quiet and huddled around a small screen showing a sparkly ball.
“Ten. Nine. Eight…” the group counted in unison.
“Amazing,” commented Kyp. “They can count.”
“Four. Three. Two. Happy New Year!”
The group erupted into cheers as fireworks exploded over the city. Kyp, edging his way to the back of the group, suddenly found himself grabbed and kissed by a complete, and slightly inebriated, stranger.
Before he could say anything, the man winked and disappeared into the crowd.
“I don’t know what you’ve been complaining about,” said Phaelon, failing to contain an undignified giggle.
Kyp stammered impotently. How did he respond to something like that?
