Warnings Ignored

Mal was concerned as he watched Kaylee and Jayne flirt and tease each other. Gorrammit! He’d warned them both ta stay the di yu away from each other. Seemed nothin’ ever went smooth in the black.

“Jayne, can I have a word with ya?”

“Sure, Mal.” Jayne walked over to where the Captain was beckoning him over.

“Am I or am I not the Captain o’ this boat?”

“Ya are,” Jayne said, his brow wrinkling in confusion.

“Well then. Can ya tell me why the hell ya still flirtin’ with ma mechanic?”

“Flirtin’ ain’t breakin’ her heart.”

“If that ain’t settin’ her up fer a whole lotta heartache, can ya tell me what it’s supposed ta be doin’?”

“Mal.”

“Jayne, I told ya the way o’ things, an’ I expect ma crew ta take care of each other.”

“Oh, I’d like ta take care o’ her,” Jayne grinned.

“Are ya lookin’ ta have me space ya out the airlock? ‘Cause that’s what I’m thinkin’ o’ doin’ right now.”

“Is everythin’ alright, Cap’n?” asked Kaylee.

“Everythin’s shiny! Ain’t that right, Jayne? Have we got an understandin’?”

“Just shiny, Captain,” Jayne growled and stormed out.

“What did ya say ta him, Cap’n? Sure, he’s a lil rough round the edges, but ya wouldn’t bring him on board if ya though he was real dangerous.”

“Ah, Kaylee, ya would be getting’ any ideas about him, would ya?”

“Who me? After ya warned me off, never!”

“Kaylee,” Mal growled.

“Cap’n, I’m a grown woman now.”

Mal smiled down at his mechanic. “Ya still seem awful young an’ green ta ma.”

“Mal, I’m old enough ta make ma own choices.”

“Ya choose him, an’ I ain’t pickin’ up the pieces.”

“Ain’t askin’ ya to. Just give us some space ta make our own mistakes.”

Mal sighed and rubbed his hand across his face. He just knew there was a whole heap o’ trouble on the horizon if’n these two ever got together. It was like watching two trains hurtlin’ toward each other, just waitin’ fer that train wreck ta happen.

Kaylee reached up on her tip toes to press a kiss to his cheek. “I love my Cap’n!” she glowed.

Mal knew he could never resist her when she glowed like that. Gorrammit, she had him wrapped around her pinky. More’n likely she’d have Jayne like that too by month’s end.

“Jayne?” Kaylee came down the steps into his bunk.

“Kaylee girl,” Jayne grinned, “Ya’d better stay away, or the Captain’ll space me.”

“And just when did you do everythin’ the Cap’n said?” she sashayed up to him.

“Kaylee, ya playin’ with fire.”

“I know.” She flirted, running her fingers across his chest, “Kinda wanted ta see what it feels like ta get burned.”

Jayne groaned and pulled her close, burying his face in her hair and just breathing in her scent. “I want ya, Kaylee girl, real bad.”

“An’ I told ya what I want, so if ya want that too, I’m ready an’ wilin’.”

“Aw, Kaylee girl, I’m just not sure I’m ready fer that yet. Gimmie some time ta get used ta the idea.”

Kaylee pulled back, “Well I guess the Cap’n got his wish.”

“What’s that?”

“Ta keep us apart.”

“Well that’s not strictly true,” he smirked, rubbing her arms.

“What d’ya mean?”

“Ya here with me now, I’d say the Captain wouldn’t be too happy with that.”

Kaylee grinned. “I reckon not.”

He lifted her chin to look into her eyes. “An’ he wouldn’t like it if we had even one lil kiss.”

“That’s true ‘nough.”

He drew her close, his hand on her cheek, and lowered his lips to hers.

Then she took over, winding her arms around his neck, burying her hands in his hair, and just losing herself in the softness of his lips, the roughness of his stubble and the warmth of his mouth and tongue.

With their lips still locked, she ran her hands down his arms and under his shirt, to caress the muscles underneath. He ran his hands down her face and neck, under her shirt and across the bare skin of her stomach, ‘till he found her breasts, gently caressing them through her bra and ghosting his fingers across her nipples.

They pulled apart, their breaths still deep, their faces glowing with desire, saying nothing.

Jayne sat down on his bunk, pulling her with him. He drew her close against him, running his fingers soothingly down her hair and back, “Bao-bei!”

Kaylee responded by pressing her cheek to his chest, and running her hands up his side and across his back. They just enjoyed the nearness of one another.

“Reckon I forgot how good it feels ta kiss a woman on the mouth,” he murmured.

“How long’s it been?”

“Ain’t trusted a woman enough ta kiss her since I was a teenager.”

“I can’t believe ya ain’t kissed a woman since ya weren’t but a boy.”

“Didn’t say I ain’t kissed a woman,” Jayne grinned, “Kissed ‘em plenty, just not on the mouth.”

“Why, Jayne Cobb…”

“Ain’t felt close to a woman like this in a good long while.”

“I wanna be close to you for a good while longer.”

“Mmmm, me too,” he said, cuddling her tight.

“So these women…”

“Don’t wanna talk ‘bout ‘em right now,” he murmured

“I’m happy with that.”

And they sat, holding each other close for some time.

As Kaylee walked across the cargo bay to the engine room, she felt large hands grab her round the waist, pulling her between the crates of goods.

Completely hidden from view, Jayne drew her close and buried his head in her hair.

“Did I ever tell ya how much I love long hair on a woman?” He whispered, running his fingers through her long, dark hair.

She shook her head. “I’ll keep it down fer ya.”

“But ya’ll tie it up when ya workin’ on Serenity?”

“’Course! I’m not a back birth, ya know. I’ve seen what happens when somethin’ gets caught in machinery. Everythin’ just kinda gets pulled in.”

“Come back ‘ere. I ain’t finished holdin’ ya yet.”

“I gotta go. Cap’n is lookin’ for me.”

“Just one kiss,” he begged.

Kaylee grinned as he pulled her close. She pressed an open-mouthed kiss against his, and sighed as Jayne’s tongue sought hers. Several kisses later, she pushed him away, hands pressing on his chest. She giggled as he gave her one last kiss then let her go. She darted out from amongst the crates just in time.

“Kaylee!” Mal shouted, “Where the di yu are ya?”
