I had the gardener in the other day to clean out the back yard. Since my dog passed away last summer, I wanted to have a bigger area for a garden. Since today was so nice, and I've been on vacation this week, I went ahead and started turning over some soil. I picked the spot where the azalea bush was removed, since it looked like it might be some nice loose soil already. Well, there are so many roots and vein look roots out there that I had to break out the big guns. I had a pitchfork, shovel, rake, a spade/prong tool and the pick-axe. I have never used a pick-axe in my life and it is one heavy mofo :D I was out there a little over an hour and all I was able to do was weed an area about 3 feet by 3 feet. I couldn't do any more because: 1. I was getting frustrated, 2. I was sweating buckets, 3. I was getting very gritty with dirt spewing up at me from pulling and 4. my back was starting to hurt.
I've decided to not plant anything in that area. I'm going to put down some slate I have laying around and put potted herbs there. I'll call it a tie ;D
