Seven albums I bought last year
(Six reasons 2011 wasn't my favourite year)
(Five new icons)
(Four new favourite TV shows)
(Three reasons why I prefer proper blogs to microblogs)
(Two amazing writers I beta for)
(and a kick up the backside for being so antisocial)
Hanggai - He Who Travels Far
Awesome Mongolian folk rock which defies classification but sounds superb. I picked it up on a whim in the World Music section of a local record shop then went back a fortnight later to pick up their other album.
Joseph LoDuca - Leverage - OST
Playful and joyous to listen to. It's the perfect tv soundtrack and absolutely iconic to the genre. And from the guy who did the Xena and Hercules soundtracks!
Depeche Mode - Ultra
I've had a copy of Violator for years and caught some of DMs greatest hits album last year so decided to pick up Ultra when it was in a sale. Now Home is one of my favourite 'sing along in the car' songs.
Zola Jesus - Stridulum II
Warren Ellis (yes THAT Warren Ellis) has become my pointer for great sounding albums and I followed a link to Zola Jesus' website with the teaser songs for her new album. Then immediately went out and bought the back catalogue.
I'm sensing a pattern which involves a lack of willpower when it comes to buying music...
Murray Gold - Doctor Who - Season 4 OST
Oh Matt Smith, thou hasn't the most incredible theme ever!
Faith No More - Greatest Hits
The FNM songs have aged rather gracefully and have made my journeys to work far more enjoyable
Jonathan Coulton - The Orange Box OST
"This was a triumph..." Never were truer words spoken.
