well, yikes: i've been working intensely the last few days in getting an exam put together for my 20th century music theory class at UW tomorrow. In corresponding with my friend Jessica about it*, she commented that my list of examples looked really cool, and then she commented that there weren't any women on it ( Read more... )

heck no - very sad about not getting in to TO.

it was a little inevitable, though, given my working style. like, yeah - i *could* get things done ahead of time, but somehow don't...

This sort of oversight happens all the time, so don't feel bad about it. It's a learning experience for you too! This is why it's good to be conscious of diversity - because /everybody/ but white guys tend to get overlooked. So the questions to ask when making any kind of list like this are "how many women do I have?" "How many POC?" etc.

the thing about society is that dismissing women is really really deeply ingrained. I believe you when you say you think of names like labels, but it's compounded by trying to fight programming you've been getting since birth. If people don't pay attention specifically to the goals of inclusion, it's much less likely to happen.

yeah - it's amazing the level of total aphasia i had, in this case at least.

lists are a good idea, until the habit of being inclusive gets more...habitual.
