Watching my dejected #NeverTrump friends melt into the backstreets last few days, it occurs to me: this is how Parisians must have felt watching Nazi tanks lumber down the Champs-Elysées - a dejected population trying to come to grips with their new lives under a hostile regime.
The Occupied French tried to make the best of it. They tried to be optimistic. They were willing to give the Nazis a chance; a “clean slate”, if you wish.
“What choice do we have?”, whispered out from joyless cafés and boulangeries.
Not all Frenchmen were willing to surrender. They were the Free French. There was Charles De Gaulle. And there was The Resistance.
This is not a history lesson and I won’t regale you with tales of The French Resistance (and there were others), although I suggest you do some reading. What I do is note this: the French Resistance succeeded.
The Resistance harassed Nazi supply lines, countered Nazi propaganda, provided valuable intelligence to the Allies, and played a major role behind enemy lines during Operation Overlord.
They resisted. And after four long years, they reclaimed France.
Because Trump won the election doesn’t mean Trump is no longer Trump. He’s still the amoral, mendacious, Constitutionally-challenged, intemperate, inexperienced, acerbic, bigoted, racist national embarrassment he was before he was elected.
He’s still promising to wall-in Americans on the southern border. He’s still promising to deport millions who have come here illegally only seeking freedom, disregarding the horror that action will impose on millions of honorable hard-working families.
He’s still promising to ban more than one-billion innocent people from entering the United States on the basis of their religion, alone.
He’s still promising to expand libel laws and to destroy press organizations whose only transgression is daring to criticize him.
He’s still the candidate that chose a campaign manager with proven ties to Russian military and espionage, and who formerly worked for a brutal Putin-puppet dictator in Ukraine.
He’s still the candidate who coordinated with the Russian Government to use WikiLeaks to destroy his political opponent.
He’s still the candidate that promised to jail his political opponent.
He’s still the candidate that called himself “The King of Debt”, who suggested the United States of America default on its Full Faith and Credit, and who promises to drive us further into debt with a $1.7T stimulus program.
He’s still the candidate that accused Ted Cruz’s father of conspiring to kill JFK, and who mocked his wife for her looks.
He’s still the candidate that called Ben Carson a child-molester and mocked the Pope. He’s still the candidate that demeaned Marco Rubio for his height.
He’s still the candidate that mocked a reporter for his disability, and a debate moderator for her menstrual cycle.
He’s still the candidate that said The First Amendment goes too far, and who banned the press from his rallies. He’s still the candidate that roused his followers to be aggressive toward the press and peaceful protesters.
He’s still the candidate that claimed the election was rigged against him, calling into question the concept of American Democracy.
He’s still the candidate that urged his followers to intimidate Americans of color at the polling places and who sued (unsuccessfully) in Nevada to have innocent poll workers’ personal information published so they could be harassed.
He’s still the candidate that praised Vladimir Putin as a greater leader than Barack Obama.
He’s still the candidate that said POWs weren’t heroes because they were captured. He’s still the candidate that said he knows more about the military than our generals, who asked why we couldn’t use nuclear weapons, and who said we should withdraw from NATO.
He’s still the candidate that has the support of Putin, Kim Jong-un, David Duke, the KKK, Golden Dawn, the National Alliance, VDARE.com and the American Nazi Party.
He’s still the candidate that routinely retweets white supremacists.
He’s still on trial for fraud in December. He’s still been accused of rape three times. He’s still recently been accused by twelve women of sexual misconduct. He’s still a misogynist.
The list of deplorables goes on … but back to why I’m joining the Resistance.
There is no rationale for assuming the man who created this abominable list will suddenly act responsibly. There is no rationale for assuming a man who has verbally assaulted half The Bill of Rights will suddenly respect or defend the freedoms enshrined in that document. To believe, or suspend disbelief, that he will do so is simply absurd.
For a patriotic and moral man, which I am, Trump is an occupier.
He’s a hostile regime in my once-free and moral country. He gets no “clean slate”. I will not sit in the cafés and watch his figurative tanks lumber down the Elysian Fields, the “Streets of My Heaven” as the French would say.
I will not give him the benefit of the doubt because there is no benefit to give. And there is no time to waste.
And if he defaults on all his promises, condemns Russian interference in our elections, denies WikiLeaks, doesn’t fully repeal Obamacare, doesn’t drain the swamp, doesn’t jail Hillary, doesn’t build his Wall, doesn’t ban Muslims, excoriates white supremacy, doesn’t drive us another $1.7T in debt, starts acting with compassion, integrity, and with grace, he will be the most prolific liar since Joseph Goebbels and the most adept political charlatan since Adolf Hitler; which is arguably more dangerous.
My place is with the Resistance. I joined it around 1AM early Wednesday morning. I will harass his supply lines, counter his propaganda, provide valuable intelligence to you, and be there on Tuesday, November 3, 2020 when we drive out the occupier and reclaim our homeland.
Vive La Résistance.
