**Sorry it's so short; school and other writings eat up my time...these are simply insomnia-induced ravings.  Enjoy! :-)

Barney straightened his tie in the mirror.

“I must say, you look particularly suited up this evening.”

Barney smirked and met Lily’s eyes in the mirror.  “I can’t believe I called you.”

“I can’t believe you ever considered not calling me!  This is huge, Barney!  This is Robin!”

“This is Robin and Ted,” he corrected.  He turned toward her and held out his hands.  “How do I look?”

She stepped toward him and reached for his tie.  “Let me just…”

He slapped her hand away.  “Hey!  Hey, watch the tie.”

“I am watching the tie.  I’m looking at the tie, and it’s crooked.”

“No, it’s not.”

“Yes, it is.”  She started to reach for his neck again.

Once more he smacked her hand away.  “Look, even if it was crooked now-which it’s not-it’s just gonna get crooked in the cab, and then I’ll just straighten it again at her door.  So all your valiant efforts would have been wasted.”

She tucked her hands into her pockets and blew her bangs out of her eyes.  “The tie’s not crooked,” she mumbled begrudgingly.

“I know the tie’s not crooked.  I just said that.”

She sat on his couch and sighed.  “I just wanted to…I don’t know, do something.  Help in some way.”

Barney smiled and ran a hand over his jacket.  “Lil.  You’re helping.  You’re here, aren’t you?”

She shrugged.

“Lily, please.  Who else could I have called?  You’ve been my wingman through this whole thing.”

She smiled at that.  “This is kind of our thing, isn’t it?”

“It definitely is.”  He tilted his head.  “This is just our thing, right?  You haven’t told anyone?”

“Nope.”

“Not Robin, not Ted…”

She shook her head.

“Not Marshall?”

She bit her lip.  “I may have mentioned to Marshall-”

“Lily!  I told you not to-”

“That you’re trying to get Robin into bed again,” she talked over him, grinning.

Barney cut himself off mid-tirade.  He pursed his lips.  “Oh.  That’s okay, then.”

Lily nodded, clearly proud of herself.  “I knew I wouldn’t be able to lie to him, so I figured out a way I can tell him without really telling him.”

Barney held up his hand.  “Well done.  High five!”

She slapped his palm and nearly bounced in her seat.  “I’m so psyched for you, Barney!  This is Robin!”

“This is Ted and Robin,” Barney corrected for the second time.

“Well, that’s only dinner.  And that’s only if she didn’t hear what you said.”

He smirked.  “Am I really hoping that she hung up on me after I pseudo-declared my love?  ‘Cause that doesn’t sound like much to be excited about.”

She smiled.  “Well, either way, you still have the hockey game to be alone with her.”

“I hardly call sitting in a crowd of sweaty strangers being alone, Lil.”  He waited a beat.  “I call that last Saturday night!  Hey-oh!”  He held up his hand again but this time she only said “Ew” and shook her head.  He laughed and put his hand down.  “Okay, but you’ve gotta give me props for this suit.  Great, right?”  He fanned the jacket out and spun in a slow circle.

“Great,” she agreed.  “I wonder what she’ll wear,” she asked and started going through Robin’s outfits in her head.  Because she was distracted, she almost missed Barney’s expression.

Barney’s eyes had taken on a far-away look and a smile lit up his face.

“Whoa,” Lily breathed.

“What?”  He asked distractedly.

“I just asked you what you thought she’d be wearing.”

“Yeah?  And?”

“And you didn’t say anything about slutting up.  Neither did you say she’ll be wearing me by the end of the night.”

Barney grinned.  “Oh, that’s a good one.  That’s so going in my bl-”

“Barney!  Do you realize what this means?”

He looked at her quizzically before looking again into the mirror.  “Um, no.”

She stood and stared at his back.  “You’re in love with Robin.”

Barney smirked.  “Yeah, Lil, where have you been?”

Lily took a few more steps toward him and her smile grew.  “No.  Barney, you’re really in love with her.”

“Yeah.”

“I didn’t believe it before,” she admitted softly.  “But…your face just now, Barney, if she sees that face, she’ll know.  She’ll know in a heartbeat.”

He frowned.  “Oh.  Well.  I’ll-”

“She’ll go for it,” Lily interrupted.

Barney met her eyes in the mirror.

“She has to,” she continued.  “Hell, if I wasn’t completely in love with Marshall and you looked at me like that…well, let’s just say I’d have some things to think about.”

“Really?”  Barney grinned and turned.  He slid his hands onto her hips.  “Well, if you wanna-”

“No, Barney,” she said and laughed.  She stepped out of his grasp.

Barney licked his lips.  “Really?”  He said again, softly this time.  Seriously.

“Really,” she confirmed.  “With that suit and that look, I don’t know how she’ll be able to resist.”

Barney raised his fist.  “Thanks, Lil.  You’re a surprisingly good wingman.”

Lily bumped her fist lightly against his.  "Good luck, Barney."
