J is good, very good. We were at my parent’s house for less than twenty minutes before he had my mum eating out of the palm of his hand. On the plus side she was so charmed by him that she spent most of the night talking to him. On the not-so-plus side her complete adoration of all things J caused her to believe that any issues or lack of developments in our relationship must be my fault, which lead to this gem of a conversation:
Mum: You know [my name], men are very physical beings. If a relationship isn’t... physical enough they may underestimate how serious it is.
Me: Why are you doing this to me?
Mum: I’m only trying to help you.
Me: Well, I really don’t think that’s an issue.
Mum: Are you sure?
Me: We’re plenty physical.
Mum: Maybe the problem is too much then. You’re giving all your... attentions away for free.
Me: Are you telling me to be a prostitute?
Mum: Don’t be ridiculous. I’m merely suggesting that you give the man some incentive.
As we were getting ready for bed in my parents guestroom that night I summarized our chat for J.
Me: My mum says I should withhold sex until you propose to me.
J: Then I guess it’s a good thing you never listen to your mother.
