It's been ages since I updated this thing.
That's a sentence that tends to mark the beginning of a doomed attempt by someone to recommit to updating their blog, online journal, or whatever you want to call it. I've done it myself more than once.
Well, screw that. This thing was supposed to be fun, not a chore. Entertainment, and perhaps an attempt at connecting with some people in such a (selfish) way that they have to listen to me. I haven't felt the need for that, recently, and so I haven't updated. Simple as that.
It comes with a certain acknowledgment of how I see things. You all know that I live at an Ecovillage. And yet, you may have noticed that I've not used this space (ok, maybe once or twice) to spout propaganda about how you should help save the planet.
At the end of the day, each individual person on this planet has to make a choice. There's a balance between short-term life gain and long-term life gain; it takes many forms - "eating right", "exercising", "saving money", "not robbing a bank". Every day, you choose between the two. There are occasions where you find an option that is good in both the short and long terms, but those are so rare as to be negligible, and you can never be sure you haven't overlooked a long-term cost; just look at how people saw smoking back in the 50's. Oops.
So, it's simple. Enough people choose one way, the species survives. Not enough do, we die. Best I can do is provide information I have (help see those long-term costs) and then get the hell out of the way and let you choose.
I still make my choice daily. Sometimes, I go one way, sometimes the other. I like to think that I'm on the side of the scale that will help ensure our survival as a species. Beyond that, there isn't much I can do. And I'm fine with that. I'm living by my principles. Or trying to, every damn day.
In case I don't update for another year, or at all,
peace out.
