My 5th game was with
esdscrabble He had trounced me 428-310 earlier and as the game started it looked like it was going to be a repeat. He opened with CURLY while my opening rack was WHORMI?. I saw WORMIsH but no hooks open - the next thought in my head was WHOREMONGERING, a little too long .... I played WHOR(L) and Ed replies with (C)OATLESS. I draw the other W and fish it off. I get down MATINEES in the 3rd to even up the score. He plays GHEE for 34, I respond with XI for 36, he plays FAVE for 38, and I'm sitting with TSARINA on my rack and no hooks. I fish off an A, and draw an A. Ed lays down KOALA at 2J for 38, and I take the lead with TSARINA at O1 for 84. In the 9th he plays off ME, opening up (E)NJOIN to the triple for 63. He shifts back and forth between VELD and VELDT in the 10th, finally playing VELDT, this was a critical play. I lay down BOZ(O) for 30, he plays GERANIO(L) for 70 and the score is now 372-369. My rack is DGRSTTY, he has FPLOIEE. I actually play it correctly with DRY(E)ST for 20. Ed finds himself blocked by the V from VELDT and can't play P(R)OFILE. He has to settle for DEFILE for 43, I get 8 for T(A)G, and with 8 off his rack, pull out a 6 point win 408-402. We go over the endgame a few times, and find that I found the only winning sequence. Yeah! More gut instinct than analysis, but I'll take it.
I tend to lose big, or win close with Ed.
1950 yards this morning.
The team has moved back to the pool at Holy Names College after 10 years at Mills College, when Mills wouldn't renew our lease agreeent.. Older, shallower, narrower pool ... the only upsides are more workout time options, including noon on MWF, and only $5 for a yearly parking pass instead of $40. The other fun part is that the pool is less than 100 yards from the Hayward Fault. If the Big Quake happens while I'm in the pool, it could be quite a ride.
Spent the day in the sun, catching up with Russell in Section 139. There was also a baseball game ... our young team has a long season ahead of them ... four hit shut-out delivered by the Red Sox. Harden kept them scoreless through 5 innings but the bullpen couldn't contain Big Papi, Youk and the rest.
