I finally went to the Mid-West Genealogical Center today. I don't know why I haven't been before because it's only about 5 min. away. Still climbing that family tree. To date the longest run in a single family name branches out from my father's paternal grandmother: Martha Ellen Terrill, born in 1856, and stretches back 32 more generations to 900 AD, moving through the American South, back to Essex, England and then over the English Channel to Normandy. Old World names sound strange to American ears sometimes, but add about 450 years into the mix and you have my grandfather x 10, Menno Hendricks, who lived in the Netherlands in the late 1500s and you have his first wife, my ancestor Renske Memmens and Menno's 2nd wife...Focktyen Fockens. o.O

My g.g.g.grandfather Moses Corn Hendricks was the neighbor of Lazarus Moore in Pickens, South Carolina during the American Revolution.

I love old names.

My grandmother had 3 brothers named Pernie, Posey and Allen. I remember hearing her talk about them.

Back here I announced that I had finally discovered the name of my maternal grandfather who died long before I was born. I found the name Mick F. Hendricks (misspelled Hendrex) on the 1930 census while looking for my grandmother's name ( Read more... )

This is one of the few photos I have of my maternal grandfather, whose name was a mystery until night before last. Mick F. Hendricks (listed in the 1930 census as Hendrex), his wife Ettie (listed as Etta) Mae Hendricks née Hipps, their eldest son James (on the right) and youngest son Edward. My mother wouldn't be born for another 2-3 years.
