micaturtle and obsessive0514, I swear to god I am still writing your prompt fic. Just still caught up in some real life stuff at the moment and it's taking up a lot of my computer time. Oh yeah. It's awesome to see a girl coming of age film that doesn't involve her going from child to woman in a way that centers on traditional femininity- make-up and dresses and stuff. Yes, there's the dance scene and the recurring lipstick, but those are definitely placed in the realm of childish, where responsibility (her brother) and willpower are key in her growing up.

Also, it doesn't even condemn her whimsical dreamer nature, because at the end it's clear that it's okay to be a dreamer and have fantasies as long as they don't take over.

Some elements of Jim Henson's design creeped me out as a kid, though. The evil naked molerats on sticks and the Buggers. I was creeped as all hell by the Buggers, where the goblins were just funny to me. Go fig.

It's hilarious to watch Bowie in this film. I just love thinking about how the stage direction was going: "Okay, be as dramatic as possible without chewing the scenery, just be a ridiculous ham." "Okay, now throw the fake baby in the air. And dance ridiculously." "NOW SMOLDERING EYES, BOWIE, SMOLDER."
