[for talks_for_ten] So, I said, what about "Breakfast at Tiffany's"

It was hard enough to drag her away from work without a fight without any promise of kinky pseudo-public sex or the promise of a reason. But, luckily for him, she was hungry. Honestly, this was an apology breakfast. He hadn't made it home until later and by then she was curled up in bed ( Read more... )

Marion loved breakfast. She couldn't always have it the way she wanted it, and by the way she wanted it, she meant big and as much food as she could stuff into it, but the chances she got the opportunity were usually minimal. This was a bit of a surprise on Alex's part, and while she did put up a bit of a show of resistance, that was mostly because she was supposed to be working. But she would happily abandon working for breakfast.

She made her way out of the bathroom and when she spotted the woman talking to her boyfriend she paused for a second. She could tell from his body language alone that the conversation wasn't a happy one, and for a moment, she waffled on whether or not she should intrude or just watch, but then again she was always the intruding type. And that was their table the woman was interfering on, so she should naturally just go and sit down as if there wasn't a problem.

Which there wasn't.

She made her way back to the table, sitting down slowly in her seat, before looking over at Alex. "Is everything okay?" If she had heard that she was being called "dainty" she probably would have laughed in the woman's face.

"Everything is fine," Andy assured her, albeit with slight frustration. Jill wasn't moving and it was obvious Marion should have an explanation. Jill smiled warmly, her eyes somewhat friendly.

Biting the bullet, Alex acquiesced. "Mar, this is Jill. Jill - Mar," he said, looking from Jill to his current girlfriend. This was all that he needed. A breakfast apology interrupted by -- her.

Well, fuck.

"Jill and I were just catching up, but apparently, she has a plane to catch," Alex said, glaring at Jill.

"He just wants me gone," Jill said with poison through her teeth. "I'm - well, I'm pre-you, post-Sophie."

An ex. Well, this was just peachy.

She paused just long enough to lean back in the chair a little more, crossing her legs in front of her under the table. She really wasn't in the mood to deal with some catty girl that was clearly looking to get her riled over something. She didn't want to be riled. It would just kill her whole day.

Instead, she just flashed the girl a sweet smile that if you knew her, really wasn't all that sweet at all. "If he wants you gone, that probably means you should go."

Devon called that smile the Blair Waldorf which Alex hadn't gotten but it did the trick. Jill looked from Alex to Marion and then back again.

"Enjoy your breakfast." She all but sneered before walking back towards the bathrooms. Apparently, that was where she had been headed in the first place.

"I'm sorry about that," Alex said, taking his hand in his.

"Don't be," she said, giving his hand a soft squeeze. "Everybody's got a chip on their shoulder."

She had to admit, she was curious. She wanted to ask about their history, see what exactly had happened between him and Jill, and possibly this Sophie person who'd been brought up, but that wasn't the important part. If he wanted to talk about it, he'd bring it up.

Instead, she just went back to her menu and went about deciding what she wanted. "Have you had the pancakes here?"

Alex raised his eyebrows, before looking down and shrugging. "No, I haven't." He tilted his head. "Really? You don't want to know about Jill?" This was new. Not that Marion was the nosy-- directly nosy type anyway. But, it was strange. He figured he would've been in for the third degree. At least the second.

She looked at him with a bit of a smirk. "Only if you want to talk about it. Otherwise, I'd rather not ruin breakfast with me being irrationally nosy."

Again, as she said, she loved breakfast.

"Well, it wouldn't be irrational," he answered. "I mean, right. No reason to bring own breakfast. I'm with you now. I care about you." He looked down at the menu again.

She watched him for a minute, before inching closer to him nudging him lightly with her elbow. "Do you want to talk about it?"

"Look, if you want to talk about it, you can. Or, we can. She's my ex-girlfriend. She's - my ex boss," he finally admitted, albeit nonchalantly as he scanned the menu. "The pancakes do look good."

"And that's all I need to know," Marion said with a nod. "The pancakes do look good. I think I'm gonna get the banana nut ones."

"I was with Sophie when I took the job with The LA Daily News. Jill wasn't exactly subtle. I feigned all of her advances," he said, setting the menu down. "She manipulated our break-up. I wouldn't work under her again. Months passed and I didn't interact with her. It's how I got into sports. She was the entertainment junior editor. I was leaving one night and I heard a noise coming from one of the front offices."

He looked down at his hands then back up at Marion.

"She was crying. It had been so long since -- I sat with her. Talked. We became friends. Really...reluctant friends on my part. But, things grow. It wasn't long before I realized how psychotically controlling she was. I broke it off. There was a -- pregnancy scare or, or lie and everything ended with her being fired for plagiarizing a few articles."

Now that he had gotten it off his chest, he took a long breath.

She watched him, listening as he spoke, and leaning into him a bit as he reached the end -- not enough that they were being overtly affectionate, but just enough that he would know she was there.

"Sounds like you're better off without her."

"I'm way better off," he said, smiling softly. "I mean, I love you," he said, eyes wide after. "Which, I hate the circumstances but -- I love you, Marion."

She grinned a bit at that, before leaning in to kiss him gently. "I love you, too."
