I admit I didn't really think much about Rook one way or the other during most of s5, but I'm loving what you guys are doing with him here. So much. The entire setup has me all kinds of excited to see where you take it.
Loved the scene where Cutler visits Rook's office. That was perfect.
Also this:
Yorke wore his mask like second skin but Rook saw the monster peeking out through the cracks.
and this:
"What would be your definition of a hero's life?”
“To continue living no matter how much it hurts. And no matter how much you hate yourself for it. I suppose I am a silver lining kind of a man at heart.” Yorke’s voice almost didn’t modulate, as though he truly believed what he was saying. That bit just seemed really true for Hal ( ... )

I thought Rook had the potential to be one of the few redeeming qualities in s5. I really liked him in 4x08, he seemed so cool and enigmatic, but of course s5 ruined that too by making him hysterical and one-sided (and him trusting Hatch was frankly plain stupid!). Since s5 doesn't happen here, we're mostly basing Rook on the 4x08 image, but bits and pieces of canon do seep in. XD I love exploring the idea of someone vert opposed to the regime ending up becoming its unlikely ally (hence my earlier Hal/Eve fics XD) and we both love the dystopian future much more than s5 canon XD So we just couldn't ignore this opportunity. ;)))
Haha, "really true" is a loose definition when it comes to Hal. But yeah, he probably believes his attempts to go dry were heroic. >_< Rook would headdesk at this comparison. XD ( ... )

Nobody feels sorry for Alan, mwahaha. Cutler's just ??? at all that.
Rook turns everything to work and Hal turns everything to innuendo, the struggle of the century.

because I was sure Hal would do something really nasty to Rook. He recruited him, I'm sure that qualifies XDDDD But yes, nice Hal is a creepy Hal. XD I think this story is in a way my means of making peace with Hal. I can't stand s5 Hal but unapologetically evil dystopian Hal is another thing entirely.
LOL at Cutler being pissed at Hal's softly-softly approach. As Shiro once pointed out, Cutler is Hal's wife and Rook is Hal's mistress. XDDDD Cutler is just jealous. >_<
Five to one odds in Hal's favour. Knowing Hal, the gun was probably empty. XD
I seem to recall Hal living in Buckingham Palace in other stories too. I don't know where it comes from, but I always write him living there when I write stories set in this version of reality. It just seems like such a Hal thing to do. First ( ... )

Unfortunately, I can never look at evil!Hal the same way again. Aside from that weird singing moment (and the whole Jekyll & Hyde thing), evil Hal isn't as different from what I'd previously imagined as I'd feared he'd be. He's quite obnoxious with his air of superiority but that's how the cool bad guys are unless you mix in some angst. XD Still, since I firmly believe 99 % of s5 are somebody's drunken hallucination, I draw the line at the bits and pieces of canon on evil Hal we got in s4. He was diva-ish there too but not that OTT. XD

Oh god, where to start with this one? So much good stuff. Hal and Rook and Cutler. And a cameo (so far?) from Fergus. All my favourite people together in one place.
You did a great job of capturing canon-Rook at the start.
death was the only logical conclusion and he would meet it on his own terms - That really echoed the attempted suicide scene from the show.
God, his suit had been utterly ruined. It made his skin crawl. At least they had mopped up the blood while he was... indisposed. - Lovely characterisation of Rook's reaction to being recruited. The concern for his appearance, the loss of his prim and proper respectability, and the understated and euphemistic "indisposed". <3
He heard Cutler mutter: “Who the hell is that?” Fergus' eyes were bright with malice. "His lordship's new chew-toy." - That brought a big cheesy grin to my face. I've missed those two, with their bickering and their jealousy. XD
An ingratiating voice inside his head suggested that he ( ... )

I'm so thrilled that you liked this. <333 Especially Hal because God knows it's still hard for me to write him. That thing we shan't speak of delivered a mighty blow to his character. T_T But this Hal is easier because he's so many layers of evil that it's fun to deal with. XD (Not sure it's as fun for the other character as it is for us though XDDD)
Haha, I've missed Cutler and Fergus too. We rewatched s4 a few weeks ago and I once again lamented that Fergus didn't have more time. T_T He certainly will have his moments here.
The voice of fandom has spoken! Nobody likes Alan. XDDD Poor Alan))
Oh, and did I mention that Hal/Rook is totally hot? Of course, I wouldn't mind if you wanted to throw some bonus Cutler into the mix. ;) We will. ;))) How could we not? XD
Thank you so much for reading (and for reappearing)! <3
