I admit I didn't really think much about Rook one way or the other during most of s5, but I'm loving what you guys are doing with him here. So much. The entire setup has me all kinds of excited to see where you take it.
Loved the scene where Cutler visits Rook's office. That was perfect.
Also this:
Yorke wore his mask like second skin but Rook saw the monster peeking out through the cracks.
and this:
"What would be your definition of a hero's life?”
“To continue living no matter how much it hurts. And no matter how much you hate yourself for it. I suppose I am a silver lining kind of a man at heart.” Yorke’s voice almost didn’t modulate, as though he truly believed what he was saying.
That bit just seemed really true for Hal.
Loved the bits about the pianist, and Hal asking Rook how he would have approached the clean-up. Also really loving all of Rook's work/regime related ideas. I think you guys have Rook down pretty perfectly so far.
You got me a little scared when Alan showed up on the scene. I really worried for a minute that Rook might try to keep him around, but luckily, no. Phew! I loved that you managed to make him obnoxious right to the very end. ;)
“It's actually noon, Dominic. Have a nice week-end.”
heh. Great job with the dialogue in this in general.
Most of all, so glad to see you writing again and looking forward to more! :D

I thought Rook had the potential to be one of the few redeeming qualities in s5. I really liked him in 4x08, he seemed so cool and enigmatic, but of course s5 ruined that too by making him hysterical and one-sided (and him trusting Hatch was frankly plain stupid!). Since s5 doesn't happen here, we're mostly basing Rook on the 4x08 image, but bits and pieces of canon do seep in. XD I love exploring the idea of someone vert opposed to the regime ending up becoming its unlikely ally (hence my earlier Hal/Eve fics XD) and we both love the dystopian future much more than s5 canon XD So we just couldn't ignore this opportunity. ;)))
Haha, "really true" is a loose definition when it comes to Hal. But yeah, he probably believes his attempts to go dry were heroic. >_< Rook would headdesk at this comparison. XD
Buhahahaha, oh, come on, Alan had noooo chance. XD We hate him too much! We barely remembered to make Rook feel sliiiightly remorseful for killing him. XDDDD
I'm so glad you liked this chapter. <333 Thank you!

Pfft. Hal's always been a very consistent, easy to understand, and well thought out character. ;) (I think by "really true" I more meant "immediately reminded me of his discussion in 4x08 with Snow". It also reminded me of some s5-based discussions I'd had with people as to whether Hal's suicidal during s5 (I say no))
re: Buhahahaha, oh, come on, Alan had noooo chance.
haha, maybe you were determined to turn Alan around and make him eventually likeable or something! Maybe you guys wrote this while drunk! You never know ;)
re: road trip comment from AO3
I am always a sucker for a road trip, so you won't hear any complaints about impending travel from me!
re: thequestioning's comment below that Hal should have recruited Rook instead of Crumb in s5
...this never occurred to me as a possibility, (and I feel like I say this all the freakin' time) but man, that would have been a better idea than what we got.
Also thequestioning's note re: "You have always been a monster."
I meant to mention this bit too. Yes! This whole conversation in the tub was great (and I love Rook turns the discussion to his work), but I especially loved this.

Nobody feels sorry for Alan, mwahaha. Cutler's just ??? at all that.
Rook turns everything to work and Hal turns everything to innuendo, the struggle of the century.

Tbh it feels like we wrote all of it while drunk. XD We wrote the preliminary draft while s5 was still on air, so yes, we must have been very drunk!
I am always a sucker for a road trip So are we! XD Road trips are the best way for the characters to sort out their issues. ;))
Hal should have recruited Rook instead of Crumb in s5...this never occurred to me as a possibility It's all I've been thinking about since I saw 5x01. XDDD
This whole conversation in the tub was great Esp. the tub part XD You're right, we were drunk. XDDDD
