Summary: "I have sworn the blood brotherhood with a painted tribesman up beyond where Hadrian's Wall stands now..."
This story was written for motetus's gorgeous illustration of young Uncle Aquila and his Painted Tribesman Boyfriend, Memories of the North. The image is based on a quote from the book, but uses the movie character depiction of Aquila (Donald Sutherland, yum!), so I've tagged it as both. It's gen in the same way Sutcliff's books are gen, which is to say that the friendship between the men is so emotionally deep that it's practically a love story; or at least that's what I was going for. The story is pre-canon and so can be read without knowledge of either book or movie, although the framing story will have more resonance if you're familiar with one or the other.
Both the picture and the story have their genesis in a couple of comment conversations way back in the spring. motetus and I agreed that we both wanted Uncle Aquila backstory (and also, that Donald Sutherland is really hot) and then she said she wanted to draw it and I said I wanted someone else to write it and really, I was going to claim a different artwork, but someone else beat me to it and I was seekritly glad because I had to admit I wanted to write this story after all.
