ten things I generally assume you know about me

A couple of years ago cereta started a meme on "ten things you probably know already about me," and I did it - ten things that people who had been reading my journal for a long time had probably figured out, that I sort of assume everybody knows and therefore don't spend any time explaining, but that new friends might not yet know. Sort of a "who I am" ( Read more... )

meanderings, lj, meme

This was super-interesting, thanks! And amusing, possibly unintentionally so. You had me here:
Now this is kind of a catch-all: fanfiction and recs, pointers to cool things, commentary on life, weather, music, food, squid, whatever.
And then again here:
hi, we talk about gay sex and time travel and swordfighting. Sometimes all at the same time.)

HEE.

Oh, man, now some part of my brain is convinced there's a story somewhere out there about gay sex and time travel and swordfighting...and it really, really wants to read it.

ARRGH. :D

I will not friend you if you don't use standard English capitalization in your journal.

Amen, amen! I won't say I've never posted a typo when tired, hurried or distracted, but semi-literate maundering strung together in one gigantic paragraph? Er, NO. As I've said more than once, I spend enough time at work dealing with people whose IQ is lower than their body temperature, I'm not going to seek ignorance out in my private life.

Yeah, it's - complicated. I mean, I appreciate that there are people for whom typing is difficult and painful, who for ease and comfort might not use capital letters. Just as I appreciate that there are dyslexics and blind people who may not notice their typos, and in fact I had a blind woman friended some time ago. But it makes it so much harder for me to read, and I have such a visceral reaction, that I finally decided that I don't really care what your excuse is, whether it's a real problem or just style. The effect is the same: it irritates me to read.

It's like reading stories written by someone whose English is very poor (and who doesn't get them beta-read by someone with a better grasp of the language). Yes, of course I understand that I can't hold that writer to the same writing standards as someone for whom English is the native tongue. But the effect is the same, so I choose not to read such stories.

Fortunately, I'm not face to face with them. This way, I can roll my eyes and commit imaginary acts of strangulation without fear.

Isis - as someone who's just met you it's very cool to read this.

BTW, I finally downloaded Audacity this morning and am ready to try my first podfic! \o/ Wish me luck!

See, you're exactly the audience I figure might want to read this kind of stuff. A lot of the people reading this lj have been around since my Harry Potter days - they probably could have written this!

And yay for podfic! If you have trouble figuring out Audacity, feel free to email me or ask questions in podfic_tips.
