escapist fantasy and costume drama

Last night Benton[*] and I saw Stardust, and, yay! We both liked it a whole lot! (Amusingly, he had taken my explanation of, 'I read the book, so I want to see it. It's sort of a fairy tale' as being metaphor, that it would be a regular old romantic comedy, and so was pleasantly surprised. He only likes movies with horses in them. Unicorns apparently count.) Now, who was it on my flist who wanted Captain Shakespeare slash? Because, YES PLEASE. Oh, Robert De Niro, you are old and not cute but I still ♥ you.

One thing that struck us about not just this movie but the trailers we saw (The Golden Compass, Elizabeth: The Golden Age, and The Spiderwick Chronicles) is, wow, what's with the spate of fantasy and costume drama lately? I mean, to some extent, this is biased by the few movies that we actually tend to see in theaters; the last one we saw was the most recent Harry Potter. But it seems to me that the cinema zeitgeist has moved from "things blowing up" to "magic, elegant dresses, and horses." Not that we are complaining. Although sometimes I do like watching things blow up.

[*] okay, not his real name, but it does start with a B and he has many Fraserish tendencies, so.
