escapist fantasy and costume drama

Last night Benton[*] and I saw Stardust, and, yay! We both liked it a whole lot! (Amusingly, he had taken my explanation of, 'I read the book, so I want to see it. It's sort of a fairy tale' as being metaphor, that it would be a regular old romantic comedy, and so was pleasantly surprised. He only likes movies with horses in them. Unicorns ( Read more... )

I take your point about the trailers, but...we also went to see The Bourne Identity III the other day, and it was a whole different world of cinematic previews: not a bit of fantasy or SF in the bunch. :)

Yeah, I'm not surprised. Which is why I caveated with 'what we tend to see'.

Any horses in Bourne Identity?

Oddly enough, not a single horse.

Much jumping from roof top to roof top, however. :)

Didn't you get the memo? Summer blockbusters are for things blowing up. Fall brings the indie releases and more magic, elegant dresses, and horses. It was a fluke that the latest Harry Potter came out in the middle of the blockbusters. ;)

They definitely try to match the previews with the feature presentation, though it tickles me when they don't. Some movies are too bizarre to match, and you can imagine the confusion about which previews to choose. Talking animals? Teen slasher flick? Oh, screw it, let's go for British romantic comedy!

I'm continually disappointed that every new movie seems to be an adaptation, remake, or sequel. Little of the pretty pretty princess fantasy stuff is original. :(

Yeah, sometimes it seems the previews are weirdly inappropriate.

And yay for fall if we get elegant dresses and horses!

I am very amused by this notion that unicorns "count" :-) Thanks for the movie rec: I was torn between seeing this and "Hairspray". When we're not in the mood for musical theature or action fantasy makes a nice alternative. /is genre-ific

...the trailers we saw (The Golden Compass, Elizabeth: The Golden Age, and The Spiderwick Chronicles) is, wow, what's with the spate of fantasy and costume drama lately?

*g* When I saw all of the trailers during Harry Potter I leaned across to whisper to my boy, "It seems that nothing magical happens to children from a visible minority. Oh dear."

Horses or vaguely horse-like animals are all fair game! He happily saw Brokeback Mountain with me - but then complained that they weren't cowboys, they were sheep herders.

Hee. I suppose Cho Chang is as minority as it gets, these days.

We went and saw it, complete with trailers, and pocketmouse pointed out that it was as if, somewhere, there was a hugely popular book or movie in which the protagonist is a child who suddenly discovers that he's both a) magical and b) expected to save the world.

It's the only thing that could POSSIBLY explain the sudden spike in these films. Only, whatever could it be? *g*

Gosh, what an amazing coincidence! Whatever could it be?

We will also settle for movies with magic, elegant dresses, horses, AND explosions!
