2. D5 Banana Cup!
Deckels finished 7th in the tournament :)
But sad to say, I was a total chump over the weekend. Dropped one in the endzone, plus threw it away on the goal line after going deep, almost throwing a callahan etc. Sometimes, I really wonder if I'm improving at all. Sigh, oh well, it's back to the drawing board for me again. Had my moment of glory skying on D on a floating disc over like 5 players, but as with all of my great moments, some chap decided to knee me in the thigh as I was jumping. The moment I got the D and landed, I couldn't walk and had to take a sub. Classic haha.
But, I must say, that despite my confusion on offence due to the extremely weird German vertical stack, the confusion on Zone Defence was well deserved, because the Deckels Reigel (?) Zone is FUCKING BRILLIANT and I've not played on anything like that before. It's extremely stifling and was really effective even in mild wind. I would imagine it would be even better in strong cross-winds, but even in a mild wind, the only way to break through effectively was either the deep shot or the cross field hammer. Handler/poppers movements were so easily denied. It's amazing. I was just impressed by how much we could push even the eventual finalists (Bad Raps) repeatedly into their endzone because there was just no good way to work it forward.
Anyway, this tournament was really a tournament of firsts. My first time swimming in a lake. Ever. And it was crazy cold! But it was a good cool down after our first day. Just driving to the lake and stripping to our shorts and jumping in. Then swimming across to the other side and just basking in the sun. Fantastic.
First introduction to Czech beer, and while nothing worth shouting about, the cost of ONE EURO per pint was just simply amazing, especially at the party where everyone was just chilling and having a ball of a time.
My first European moment, where women showered with the men. And despite what you might fantasise about it. It's just weird on so many levels. I was told that women and men would take turns to shower in the common shower. So I went in with a bunch of guys to shower, and halfway in, suddenly a bunch of women just came in completely naked. I literally went O.o W.T.F is happening here. I dried up and left straight away. And the best part, the other guys in the shower just carried on like it was perfectly normal. Welcome to Europe I guess.
And it was also extremely nice to meet Beka again :) Really made my day when I saw her on the first day. I think it's the first time a woman (other than Val and my mum) gave me a bear hug haha.
All in all, despite a piss-poor performance on the pitch, this weekend in the Czech Republic... utterly fantastic.
