So I saw this movie, the end of suburbia, on fri night. Basicaly it was talking about how suburbia sucks and why it wont last. Well growing up there I can attest to the suckage. the idea that stuck with me the most though was "the end of oil" or peak oil. in a nutshell the idea is that eventualy we wont have any more oilfor energy and life as we know it will violently be changed. The idea has a doomsday bend to it.
the idea is based on how oil wells work. When first started the well will not produce a lot but once it gets going it flows like water. soon the pressure in the well runs out and to keep pumping oil pressure needs to be added either be pumping water or methane into the well. increasing the pressure of the well will always become to expensive so the well is abandoned. when graphed the production of an oil well is a bell curve. if this is applied on a global scale the world will run out of oil thats worth pumping. This will happen sooner then all the oil will be extracted.
the theory isnt all that harmless. its the fact that the peak of oil production is either here now or has passed. there are graphs that show this but i dont have any. what this means is that in 5 to 10 years oil will become something only extremely rich people wil be able to afford. also all sectors of our economy that cant afford the oil will perish (farming, trucking, plastics, pharmaceuticals, energy...).
I cant see any holes in the theory. it fuckin scares me. I want ya'all to read this and tell me what you think. I could be going off about nothing. whaever the case im looking up how to distil water to be prepared for the coming apocalypse.
